Oh, that’s a bit odd

Kamala Harris is mixed race, I’m mixed race – and Donald Trump is a dusty old relic
Arwa Mahdawi

So race does exist and is something to consider then? But I thought that race – among humans – wsa an unscientific concept?

It’s so hard to keep up these days as definitions are changed according to what is useful in the moment.

Of course, there’s also an entire missing of the point being made:

Lo and behold, this is exactly what happened. When asked about Kamala Harris, Trump complained that the vice-president seemed to have undergone some sort of racial metamorphosis. “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black,” Trump proclaimed. “So, I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”

He added: “You know what, I respect either one. But she obviously doesn’t, because she was Indian all the way, then all of a sudden she made a turn and she became a Black person. And I think somebody should look into that.”

When it was convenient for Kamala to present herself as being Indian she did so, later when it was convenient to present as black then and therefore….

While somebody is looking into that, they should probably also investigate what year Trump thinks it is. I know the guy was born in 1946 – 21 years before the US struck down state antimiscegenation statutes – but it’s 2024. It feels laughably out of touch to be publicly bemused by multiracial people when they are the fastest growing demographic in the US. This growth is partly down to an increase in interracial couples, but it is also because the 2020 US census added more nuance to racial categorisation, allowing for better data capture. People whose identity didn’t fit into a neat little box didn’t have to tick “Other” any more.

That is, it’s nothing to do with being multiracial, it’s to do with the changeability of Kamala’s presentation.

  1. The Meissen Bison

…Donald Trump’s appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists’ convention last week would involve him saying something stupid and racist.

The fact that there should be a National Association of Black Journalists is of course stupid and racist in itself.

  2. Do they mean East Indian Indian, or Fauxahontas Indian?

Maybe she is of sufficient brain to believe she is West Indian and that makes her Indian.

  3. Rather ironically, a people who engaged in a 50 year civil war over whether they were the real true Indians or the other side were real true Indians.

A kind of predecessor of Woke, if you like.

  4. Funny bit, lefties are howling, “why is Trump obsessed over the Indian/black thing” – they asked him about it, he didn’t bring it up.

Likewise, Stepanopolous (don’t care about the spelling) kept badgering Byron Donalds about it – “why are you obsessed, why are Republicans obsessed about this topic I won’t let go”!!!

  5. Dennis, Pointing Out The Obvious

In 2019 Harris was hailed in Democrat circles and the MSM as the first Indian-American to be elected to the Senate. Five years later, those same Democrats and MSM types are insisting she’s African-American. Why? Because she is useful to white liberal elites and the power structure they dominate. They don’t care whether she’s Indian or Black, they care whether she’ going to toe their line. She will, so they back her.

    End of discussion.

If Malcolm X was alive today, he’d be pointing to Kamala Harris (and Arwa Mahdawi, for that matter) as the perfect example of “house negro thinking” in the service of “foxy white liberals”. And you know what? He’d be right.

  6. I have an impression – open to correction – that when lefties say “biracial” or “mixed race” they always mean black/white. Consequently a brown/black/white person such as Kamala presents a conundrum, solved by presenting her as whatever suits best at the moment.

  7. Dennis, Pointing Out The Obvious, Yet Again

I have an impression – open to correction – that when lefties say “biracial” or “mixed race” they always mean black/white. Consequently a brown/black/white person such as Kamala presents a conundrum, solved by presenting her as whatever suits best at the moment.

There is no conundrum. The concept of race, at least in terms of politics, no longer has any meaning. Elizabeth Warren was a Native American Indian until she wasn’t. The fact that there was no outrage about her appropriating her “heritage” proves the point… It had always been recognized, though never mentioned, that Warren was lying about it. The same goes for Kamala Harris. She isn’t African-American, and everyone in the political sphere knows that. The progressive/liberal/Democrat power structure view race as nothing more than a means to an end. The calculation has been made that she is more useful as an African-American than an Indian-American… So now she’s African-American.

Scratch any white progressive/liberal/Democrat and you will find a racist. If you don’t believe me, look at what they say about an African-American man who dares to think for himself… Clarence Thomas.

  8. Kamala Harris is mixed race, I’m mixed race

    I’m pureblood.

While somebody is looking into that, they should probably also investigate what year Trump thinks it is.

It’s Current Year, bigots, why aren’t you strangely brown?

I know the guy was born in 1946 – 21 years before the US struck down state antimiscegenation statutes

How’s that working out for Americans?

but it’s 2024. It feels laughably out of touch to be publicly bemused by multiracial people when they are the fastest growing demographic in the US.

Kamala didn’t say she was mixed race, she’s pretending to be black.

I am not saying that being mixed-race is all sunshine and roses. There is still plenty of othering

    I don’t care.

Well, polite people imply. Plenty of people, mainly hiding behind avatars online, are happy to tell me directly that, with a name like mine, I couldn’t possibly be English and should go back to where I came from

You’re about as English as I am Palestinian.

Unfortunately, Trump is not the only person who can’t get their head around the fact that you can have multiple identities.

Lunatics and fraudsters also have multiple identities. I am allowed to say this because I’m mentally ill, but if you say it it’s crazyophobia, and I will phone the police.

But while there is nothing unusual about Trump’s racism, what is new is the fact that the man has a running mate with mixed-race children.

So Trump is not, in fact, racist, he just doesn’t like Kamala.

  9. Dennis: ’The calculation has been made that she is more useful as an African-American than an Indian-American… So now she’s African-American.’

How is the recent photo op of her going to a record store to buy music by black artistes (not NWA, though!) going down with the voters?

  10. JuliaM – a record shop, that’s brilliant.

Hopefully she then went to an All-Negro car wash in Harlem, and possibly dropped in on popular contemporary black artists such as Scatman Crothers, before catching “Blacula 2: Nigga Mortis” at the drive in movie theatre.

Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud. Only the harse has to take the lift, because the stairs were killing him.

  11. Kamala’s Indian ancestors were Brahmins, so the very top of the caste tree.

The idea that race is an ‘unscientific’ concept is ludicrous, except to extreme cladists – the genetic biologists who insist there’s no such thing as a ‘fish’, because land animals are more closely (genetically) related to ‘bony’ fish such as salmon than salmon are to rays or sharks.

  12. Dennis, Your Guide To The USA

How is the recent photo op of her going to a record store to buy music by black artistes (not NWA, though!) going down with the voters?

Campaign ‘events’ like photo ops like Harris buying ‘black music’ only happen for two reasons: (1) polling, and/or (2) focus groups. Harris was in that store because her campaign has data telling them she’s in trouble with black voters. How it came across with voters isn’t half as interesting as the fact that her team felt it was necessary for her to do something and then chose to put her in a record store in an attempt to get her street cred… Rather than, say, discuss things like how the economy is impacting black families and what she proposes to make things better.

Harris ran against Biden in 2020 and failed to win a single delegate before be destroyed by Tulsi Gabbard and quitting the race. Despite the MSM hype and the skewed polling of the last two weeks, I don’t see anything that suggests anyone is enthusiastic about her running for president. The fact that she ended up with a complete non-entity like Tim Walz as her VP tells you that none of the first team Democrat possibles thought she could win. The fact that Gavin Newsome and Gretchen Whitmer – both of whom would happily knife their mother for shot at the White House – quickly let it be known they weren’t interested in being Harris’ VP tells you everything you need to know about Harris’ chances of winning.

By September 1 her campaign will be in serious trouble.

  13. At least Kamala W Harris had the sense not to pick the Shapiro chap as VP candidate. Because then if they’d won it would seem likely that Mossad would assassinate her (while presumably framing someone else for it).

I’m betting that Mossad can pull off a straightforward assassination of the type that proved too difficult recently for the Dems.

  14. Dennis, An Obvious Racist

Isn’t DJT half-German, half-Scottish? So he’s mixed race as well.

Not really. You’d have to convince much of the world that there’s actually a difference between a German and a Scotsman, which would be a rather tall order.

  15. I find it churlish to criticize, hate or even dislike anybody because they were born that way. I judge people on their behaviour (and to my shame their looks and apparent intelligence). That’s all. Now tell me why anybody would want to put me or you in some race-identitarian pigeonhole if not to discriminate in some way. So why does every government form seem to have a racial category question (but never one about citizenship)? There’s more racism now than there used to be and it’s all inflicted by the establishment in the name of anti-racism.

  16. Dennis, Noting That All It Takes Is A Wog To Make A Spectic Feel Better About Himself

The Germans used to build good cars, now they build crappy ones.
    The Scots build some buses.
The Germans used to build a lot of good cameras, now they build a few.
    The Scots build some buses.
The Germans eat some really nasty food.
    So do the Scots.

    That’s about it.

  17. Dennis, Inconveniently Noting Reality

There’s more racism now than there used to be and it’s all inflicted by the establishment in the name of anti-racism.

In the name of anti-racism, but for the purpose (in ‘Merica at least) of perpetuating a permanent underclass of Blacks and Latinos that overwhelmingly votes for that (Democrat) establishment.

For the Democrat Party in the USA, illegal immigration is all about making sure Blacks and Latinos do not move from poverty to working class, or working class to middle class.

  18. @Dennis

You’d have to convince much of the world that there’s actually a difference between a German and a Scotsman, which would be a rather tall order.

The German is much more likely to speak understandable English.

  19. Dennis, A Wee Bonny Lad If You Squint Hard Enough

The German is much more likely to speak understandable English.

    True.

It occurred to me that another difference is that when a German woman wants to get a German man horny, all she has to do is dress up as Poland. The urge to invade is irresistible. That won’t work with a Scotsman.

  20. Trump has Scottish and German blood.
Harris has Jamican and Indian blood.
    Walz has German blood.
I thought Trump liked Walz in the Mexico border.

By thr way the evidence is clear. The guy who tried to kill Trump was a Republican. He was said to have Conservative views, and was a registered Republican. And his searches were fir Trump and Biden.

JD Vance compared Trump to an American version of AH.

  21. Mohave Greenie: «The German is much more likely to speak understandable English.»

Very true. There was a TV detective show called Taggart that I found utterly incomprehensible until I happened to see a dubbed episode in France.

  22. Dennis ; that is conspiracy theory logic. You are saying the reason. The Democrats are not hating immigrants is because they hate Blacks and Nations and want to keep them in poverty so they keep voting for Democrat and keep the Democrats in power.
While meanwhile your argument is Republicans care about Blacks and lationos and want them in the middle class.
    The reality is this.
The left support the poor and working class and want to lift them out of poverty, that goes Blacks, lationos and Immigrants.
The right see the working class as criminals and parasites, stealing money of hard working rich peoppe, the right hate immigrants as replacing the white population.

  23. By thr way the evidence is clear. The guy who tried to kill Trump was a Republican. He was said to have Conservative views, and was a registered Republican. And his searches were fir Trump and Biden.

If I wanted to assassinate someone, I certainly wouldn’t use the Internet to check on their likely movements. Not at all.

    Dolt.

  24. Reply to Chris Miller

But the evidence says he was a Republican. He was registered Republican, was said to have Conservative views. Unless you believe in conspiracy theories, the evidence is clear,
What kind of person labels someone a dolt for reading news and EVIDENCE?
The assassin has been investigated, and the case has been proven.
Walz would probably say it is weird to think evidence does not matter.

  25. “said to have” raises the obvious question: “by whom?” Anybody in the US can register as a supporter of whatever political party they wish. It may allow them to vote in primaries, and many Ds register as Rs (and possibly v.v.) in order to try to influence the primary vote and select what they consider to be a weaker candidate. cf. Conservatives (like me) joining the UK Labour Party in order to vote for Corbyn.

Calling someone a dolt is necessary when they’re clearly a dolt. Although a similar 4-letter word might get the message home more clearly.
