From brats to tradwives: why do we keep putting women into subcultures?
Women like joining little subcultures, tribes, bands of mates. *We* don’t do it to them.

It’s not just women that do this.
Men do it as well.
Bikers, gym bros, gamers, shooters.
This is a non-problem.
WTF’s a “tradwife”?
Bird who cooks dinner occasionally.
Tradewife sounds like Top Trumps, or football cards and marbles.
“But the ubiquity of these micro-trends nods to and disseminates something much more damaging: an increasingly popular, regressive image of women that encourages a shallow, traditional view of femininity. Some are explicitly conservative, like tradwives who promote a return to heteronormative gender roles, where women are homemakers and mothers while men go to work. The enduring “clean girl” aesthetic valorises restrictive diets and narrow views for how women should present themselves, typically aligning with a conservative lifestyle.”
Here’s a thought: what if some women have realised that the Sex and the City lifestyle is bullshit. That your BA in English just gets you a fairly average job, that you’ll spend a huge chunk of your money on childcare?
And I’m not saying all women here. There are real career women who put in the hours, maybe don’t want children. That’s their choice. But why does everyone think that being a housewife is wrong?
I guess since Derry Girls already covered “Shoes of the World” this was the only other thing they could think of to write about.
Fashion WB??
But Chernyy, we are told: ’No equivalent relentless trend cycle exists for men.’
And surely she wouldn’t be wrong?
’No equivalent relentless trend cycle exists for men.’
It doesn’t? The current trend here is fat, tattooed, lobsterised British men on holiday. Or prey as we prefer to call them.
Re, the royal ‘we’…..
You do it to yourself, you do
And that’s what really hurts
You do it to yourself, just you
You and no one else
You do it to yourself….
If the experiences of women in the former east and west Germany are anything to go buy women are more susceptible to social pressure than men. In theory women in the east didn’t have to go to work, they could have stayed at home and looked after the children. Similarly, women in the west didn’t have to stay at home to look after the children, they could have gone to work.
In practice research found that those who tried to go against the trend felt a lot of pressure in both countries to conform to social norms.
“But why does everyone think that being a housewife is wrong?”
– “If I do it, everyone else must do it. Or I might feel like I’m doing the wrong thing.”
– Extra income means more demand for stuff, which means number go up.
– in the US, the single biggest difference in voting patterns is that between married and unmarried white women. Democrats want women to be unmarried, which likely means they’re working (or want to). So the media and academia, which has been taken over by Democrats, all say “You want a career, not a husband and children.”
As the US goes, so goes the world.
This is in the “Observer Women” section.
Why would such a progressive paper have a stereotypical sex-based section anyway? To be fair and balanced it should have a Page 3 surely, just as long as it doesn’t feature any of the munters who write for it.
Boganboy,
I think there’s two things. Firstly, that women got sold on the dream of it, mostly because of the higher skilled women who were the first working mothers (for whom childcare/work added up) and then that it became the norm and women are much more compliant with social norms than men are. And women really care about the job from the social point of view, that their female friends are there, that they have charity cake sales, what they wear to work. It’s partly some work, partly serving the purpose that the WI did.
“women are much more compliant with social norms than men are”
Women are shit-scared of what other women might think. That is why the women’s section of any paper is full of things urging them to compare themselves to and to worry about.
It can’t be helped, it’s intrinsic. And thereby probably a survival trait from pre-history. It isn’t a survival trait any more when a career is favoured over marriage and motherhood.
Last month, memes describing US presidential candidate Kamala Harris as “brat” were everywhere, culminating in Charli XCX herself tweeting: “kamala IS brat”.
Let’s debate whether a 59 year old Indian woman who is the new cackling public face of an evil regime run for the benefit of sociopathic billionaires is “brat”.
Urge to send journalists to the Saudi Embassy: rising.
Compared to the senile drooling octogenarian she replaced as candidate, its easy to consider her “young”.
BiW – Desperation is a stinky cologne, and the MSM smells like Diane Abbott’s used Tena Lady.
BiND,

As I said, the workplace is now part-WI.
I’m also very sceptical about how much anyone is getting richer from this. Aside from the money being spent on yooni, the amount of taxes being shovelled into the state, into “charities” that then hire women who aren’t doing a whole lot of useful work, the increased care bill because women want to keep working while someone else looks after grandad. Just from the POV of a family budget, you have more takeaways if you both work, you have childcare, you run two cars, you employ a cleaner.
The Left: ‘We will fight for women to be empowered to make their own choices to live as they wish!’
Women: ‘I want to be a housewife and mum and look after a family.’
The Left: ‘Not that choice you fucking idiot!’
@Steve, the one thing worse than Diane Abbott’s used Tena Lady is where it came from!
The feminists have been pushing for women to value a career over a family since the 70’s, hence the collapse in birthrates and the need to import the third world to keep the welfare state running. Many are now realizing this isn’t making them happy so are reverting to the traditional wife role, which has the feminists up in arms (‘nooo you’re letting the side down!’)
Witchie – Jeremy calls it “The Black Lagoon”.
culminating in Charli XCX herself tweeting: “kamala IS brat”.
I don’t understand any of that.
Women are shit-scared of what other women might think.
Very perceptive Rhoda. In that little gem of information lies the key to understanding women.
