A British man killed by a Spaniard with a garden hoe belonged to an “expat hooligan” community, the suspect’s lawyer said.
Martin Allwright, 59, died in hospital from head injuries on Aug 19 after being assaulted by one of his neighbours in southern Spain.
José Ramos has admitted striking Mr Allwright with a garden hoe but claims that the Briton threatened him first and he had previously reported his neighbour to police.
José Ramón Cantalejo, defending, said his client was a Spaniard in his fifties with no criminal record who had co-operated with police investigators.
Mr Cantalejo said that Spaniards in villages like El Palacés de Zurgena in Almería – where the attack took place – “live in terror of these British residents, many of whom are complete hooligans”.
80 km or so along the coast. Closer to my brother actually…..
Sounds like a legacy from the Costa del Crime days.
“live in terror of these British residents, many of whom are complete hooligans”.
Foreign nationals moving to a new country and behaving extremely badly? Welcome to our world Mr Cantalejo.
I doubt it, BiW. Those guys were the ones came here when there wasn’t extradition. There were still a few about when I moved down here. Guy I used to see in a bar was an armourer. Brit gangs didn’t usually own guns. They rented them. From him. There was another old guy used to come in who he showed a lot of respect to. Didn’t take much imagination working out what he was.
These days we have people from the drug industry. They’re business minded & pretty well all of them they keep their noses clean. And of course we have your trash. Alora up north of Malaga seems to have been colonised by them.
Problems are Russians & for some reason Swedes. They seem to be having a little war. That said I reckon I’m about 500% safer living here than London. I don’t even think about getting tooled up to go for a stroll; Although I do keep well clear of Brit tourists. Scum of the earth. If asked by them if I’m English I generally reply in French.
Just remembered! My old mate Tony. Alas passed away a few years back. Over the pavement artist. (Bank robber) Never got captured for that but did an 8 stretch when he diversified into coke. “Stupid. I thought I could walk water, mate.” East Ender & a proper geezer. A gentleman. Utterly trustworthy. As many proper criminals are.
Embarrassed to admit that when all those thugs sing about “guns and hoes”, I’d got entirely the wrong idea.
V good, Rev S!

That’s the sort of thing I’d ask my brief to claim if I’d battered my neighbour to death with a garden tool.
@Marius
Since posting I’ve been looking El Palacés on Streeetview. It just doesn’t look the sort of place would attract British hooligans. OK, the Costa del Plastico isn’t exactly full of sought after resorts, but this place is well out in the camo. I’ve actually driven past it on the carratera several times. It’s in the arse end of nowhere. There is nothing whatever to do round there. Yeah I can imagine there’s some Brit retirees have bought very cheap housing in what is a relatively cheap province. There’s similar where I was on Friday about 70 km north of Marbella. A steak almost covered the plate with salad & fritas was 20€. Took half of it home for the dog. Elche on the coast south of Alicante maybe. That specialises in dubious Brits. Mention of “people who sell their houses in Glasgow or Birmingham to retire here,” made me wonder. Weegies sound menacing singing lullabies. They don’t even speak English let alone any foreign tongue.
Just occurred. Cabo de Gata a way along the coast is notorious for its tribes of marauding hippies. So maybe there’s been a bit of reputation transfer.

Doesn’t look like much of a place. In fact, it looks like the sort of place where you’d run the risk of being battered to death by some crazed yokel over an imaginary dispute.
Although it could also be the sort of place you’d retire to if you only had the proceeds of selling a Glaswegian council flat…
Perhaps the dago thought that his victim would be Allwright whatever happened …
(Is it coat getting time?)
Fuck me, their armada got royally fucked up the arse 400 years ago, are they ever going to get over it?!
I thought heees name was-a drake seeenwhore!
The only picture I’ve seen of the dead bloke has him reading Exe Men, the story of Exeter Chiefs, which was a gift from his family.
It’s a tiny piece of information, but it does make it a lot less likely (to me) that he was some sort of marauding hooligan.
That kind of thing between neighbours could happen anywhere. The thing that struck me was that he gave the hoe he was killed with to the neighbour himself presumably as a present.
There should at least be a like option for posts ( thumbs up) & preferably the ability to reply.
