Sand on picturesque Cornwall beach being ‘mined and sold for profit’
Isn’t that disgusting. For profit, eh? Sadly, there are far too many people for whom that would be the end of the story. It’s for profit, is it? Then ban it!
As it actually happens, they’re dredging to keep the harbour open …..
Dealing efficiently with the removal of excessive quantities of a freely available natural resource at a profit without even needing subsidies is a scary thought though. No wonder “residents” (the petition-signing variety) are up in arms.
Having said that, the overall constituency returned a Labour mp with the usual green and Lib Dem suspects languishing in 4th and 5th place so maybe Hayle is a bit of an exception (or possibly the local gene pool is in need of refreshing).
If they are dredging to keep the harbour open, that makes it more of a waste product. They are very fortunate to be able to turn stuff that’s a problem into something useful.
The fascinating thing is, if they were removing the dredgings & dumping them somewhere else rather than selling them to someone who needs them, the story would read “Environmental disaster!”
I was under the impression that one of the main setbacks for river dredging was that the EU had classed the product of the exercise as “toxic waste” which was almost impossible to dispose of without excessive expense.
