‘Tis Africa after all

Almost 1,000 British holidaymakers are taking legal action after being struck down with stomach bugs while on holiday in Cape Verde.

A total of 926 people over three years have been struck down with gastrointestinal infections while staying at luxury hotel resorts on the island.

Infections such as Shigella and Salmonella have been reported by holidaymakers with some unable to leave their room for several days.

They don’t tell us how many went and didn’t get infected. Salmonella, well, can get that anywhere. Bad food handling, that’s all. Shigella though, that implies at least that faeces are getting back into the water or food.

Anyway, this article brought to you by the Canary Islands Tourist Board.

“5-star hotel” and “all-inclusive” …. Ummmm…. yeah….
That’s a combo that’ll give you the runs all by itself..

I confess I don’t see the attraction, even without food poisoning. Add on 2-3 hours flight time and you could be in Cape Town or Bangkok. Even Dubai would be better if you just want to doze in the sun in a resort.

Cape Town? Really? As a tourist destination? What possible reason would you go there?

@Joe Smith – weather, scenery, wine, wildlife, food, sport, the chance to live like a king for tuppence. I’ve holidayed in Cape Town & the Western Cape maybe 10 times over the past 25 years and had a wonderful time every time. One or two hangovers, no food poisoning.

It’s Dubai I didn’t understand, Joe. What is the attraction of a country that has nothing else but other tourists?

@ Marius

The risk/reward ratio of Zuid Afrika doesn’t make sense. Yes, you could go and have a great time. Or you could get murdered! And not with the likelihood of getting murdered in even an enriched part of the UK.

The risk is for blacks and Boer farmers .

Hundreds of thousands of Brits go to SA every year and, if they were being bumped off, we’d hear about it.

Cape Town is, as Marius says, a fantastic place and the rest of SA matches it. And phenomenally cheap.

Curious how different the attitude to holidaying in “Apartheid South Africa” was…
