Well, there is one blessing here

More allegations of sexual abuse made against French priest Abbé Pierre
Catholic church says it will open its records on the once-revered Emmaüs founder, who died in 2007

He’s already found out about it all, hasn’t he? All about God, forgiveness, the weighing of souls and all that?

  1. There’s only one reason to keep investigating priests who died nearly twenty years ago. Two if you count compo.

  2. Until last year, Abbé Pierre was a revered national icon considered the epitome of Christian self-sacrifice for his humanitarian work.

On the subject of compo if you shift the time-frame backwards 10 years and take out the word “Christian” that pretty much describes the late James Saville. It’s all about the Benjamins.

  3. As I’ve said before about such subjects as this and grooming gngs and the Post Office scandal and the infected blood thing, the bigger question is not history but what is happening right now which is being ignored or covered up.

Absolutely not. In my opinion it’s a superb charity with each “community” governing itself with a view to getting the members into a fit state to return into society once they feel ready to do so. During that period everybody works using whatever skills they possess. Anyone who slips back into alcohol or other substance abuse is quietly but firmly told to leave.

  5. Actually John one of the drivers who came to collect the old furniture was full of praise. They had helped him out of a tight spot, when he had been made homeless.

I am very sceptical of many charities but Emmaus seem to be one of the good guys.

  6. One wonders about the mindset of such people. Did he really buy into the heaven or hell stuff, and perhaps he thought that confession (if he did) and absolution gave him a free ticket out of hell?
Or, perhaps he thought the Emmaüs good works gave him licence to be a bad boy without consequences to his soul later.

Why is it that religious leaders seem to be disproportionately bad boys in this respect? Do they actively seek such roles for the benefits or does the power they gain go to their heads and the little devil sitting on their shoulder says “go on, have it all”.

Ah, but this is the same god reckons it’s OK to marry 9 year olds.

  8. BiS – Ah, but this is the same god

    Nope.

There is only one God, and he doesn’t have a dirty beard.

    Both, probably?

A lot of predators go where the prey is (Catholic priest, scoutmaster, disgraced geography teachers…) but it’s also true that Satan is real and we each receive a handwritten, personalised invitation to Hell every day.

  9. If there’s only one god it must be the same one. But the camel jockey’s got a later update of the T&C’s.
