Seems fair and reasonable

Most unlike this stage of a US election campaign:

Donald Trump is not a fascist, New York’s Democratic mayor has said, in a dig at Kamala Harris ahead of the former president’s rally at Madison Square Garden.

Eric Adams defended Trump against claims made by his former White House chief of staff, General John Kelly, and repeated by Ms Harris.

“My answer is no, I know what Hitler has done and I know what a fascist regime looks like,” Mr Adams said, adding: “I think we can all dial down the temperature.”

This is also fun. For it would be agreed to by any Keynesian economist:

Gen Kelly claimed in an interview with The New York Times that Trump had argued Hitler “did some good things” including rebuilding the German economy, a claim the former president dismissed as a “made-up story”.

That build the motorways etc was and is indeed the build the infrastructure to get an economy with insufficient demand rolling again. Also, praising it or not is an irrelevance to facism – unless we want to be cruel and insist that Keynesians are fascists of course. Which is fun, has an element of truth to it too – they are advocating the same economic policies – but it’s not useful as a piece of analysis.

  1. Nazi economic policy was indeed focussed on large scale infrastructure projects, of which the autobahn network was a key factor.

The real problem that they had was that no one would lend them money and so the state was flat broke.

This is the main thread that led to the eventual expropriation of private assets.

In such respects Hitler and FDR were very similar.

ps Keynesianism. Oswald Mosley formed the BUF out of frustration with the National government for not being radical enough in its Depression policies. As it turns out of course the policy was correct and Britain emerged faster out of the Depression than other countries and with a very rapid shift in the economic emphasis away from the old heavy industries of shipbuilding, cordwangling and splodcobbling etc.

  2. Just 10 days ago at the Al Smith dinner:-

“It’s really a pleasure (to be) anywhere in New York without a subpoena for my appearance,” the Republican presidential candidate told the gathering at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York City.

As Trump began his remarks, he turned to Adams, who has been indicted on federal corruption charges, and said: “Good luck with everything.”

The moment Mayor Adams stepped out of line and started criticising the Biden (lack of) border policy which resulted in his city being flooded with illegals the lawfare switch was flipped. Other Dems have got away with far worse but they stayed on the reservation.

  3. Meanwhile…

Dem Party Officials Have a Plan to Remind Everyone “Trump Praised Hitler” By Projecting It Onto MSG

While Trump speaks in an NYC rally, the DNC plans to broadcast Trump’s associations, emphasizing his long-reported interest in Hitler.

These people need to be sent to some sort of summer camp, so they can learn to concentrate.

  4. The problem the Democrats have is when accusing the Donald of fascism, drowning puppies etc they forget that he actually was President for a full term

    Did democracy crumble?

Or has the chocolate ration really doubled?

  5. Maybe Mr Adams is hoping to follow his release from jail by getting a job in the Trump empire.

(Do I understand correctly that he has somehow crossed the Dems Who Matter?)

  6. @dearieme

You do understand correctly. He made the mistake, as Mayor of New York, of saying ‘This is fucking mad, what about New Yorkers?’ when his city and his constituents were flooded (not so much on the Upper East Side, or or Wall St, more Queens and Brooklyn etc) with Haitians, Somalis and Venezuelan drug gangs.

Such talk ist verboten. He was immediately arrested.

I assume this was a wake up call for him, and possibly some sort of encouragement to les autres.

  7. Ted S,

    Sorry about that.

May I bounce something off you? I’ve just returned from a US trip involving two long stopovers in JFK. I know airports do not necessarily reflect the surrounding cities but I was still struck by the large number of:-

    1. People wearing MAGA hats, shirts etc supporting Trump.

    2. Israeli flags on clothing and similar items dwarfing the far smaller number of Palestinian emblems.

(I also appreciated various retail outlets selling competing Trump and Harris labelled chocolate bars without evidence of anyone being triggered)

Is it the case that the general NY population is far less anti-Trump and anti-Israel than we are being led to believe?

  8. To give some balance, today from Ely comes a dissenting opinion

“Trump scares me rigid. I can’t see any other way to state my opinion about the man. He is a fascist, we know he is, and to me that is deeply frightening.”

And, for good measure, in the same blog is a reprise of the Dachau epiphany

“I remember a time when in 2016 I took my two sons to Dachau in Germany. Dachau was the first of the concentration camps created by the Nazis very soon after they took over power in Germany in 1933. My elder son read the information boards in the first building that we went into, and within minutes of our arrival there, he came up to me and said, “Dad, you’d have been in here”, and I suspect he was right because if you recall at that time I was working quite a lot for trade unions and also having some influence on the thinking of Jeremy Corbyn and the left of the Labour Party. I would have been seen as the type of person who a fascist government considered to be a threat to all that it wanted to do.”

  9. This would be the Hitler that before the war was widely praised by media in many countries and was Time Man of the Year?
I’m pretty sure all of the media slamming Trump have somewhere in their archives a published story about Hitler that is positive

  10. The media is now openly shitting itself and crying:

Was Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally an evocation of Nazism? – Sky News

Trump at the Garden: A Closing Carnival of Grievances, Misogyny and Racism – The Jew York Times

Fallout spreads from racist rhetoric at Trump’s MSG rally – Politico

Trump fills Madison Square Garden with anger, vitriol and racist threats – The Guardian

Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally was an orgy of fascism – The Independent

I dunno about you, but from now on, I’m not voting for any candidate unless he scores at least Ten Hitlers on the Hitlerometer.

  11. Steve, if I were prepared to shed my cloak of anonymity I’d still bet you £100 that Kamala ‘wins’.

As Theophilus Chilton puts it on his Neo-Ciceronian Times substack:

The Regime simply cannot afford to allow Trump to come back into office. Not with a Veep like JD Vance. Not with an uncensored tech regimen like the one Elon Musk is building. Not with RFK Jr. threatening to clean up our food supply. Not when he would go in knowing what the Deep State is like this time. Not when he’s rumbling about ending the income tax and our interventionist foreign policy and a lot of other pillars of the modern managerial state. He’s an even bigger threat to a lot of powerful folks than he was in 2020, and they’re not going to let him just walk back into the White House unopposed.

  12. Donald Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally was an orgy of fascism – The Independent is startlingly funny though. And obviously I deeply, deeply hope I’m wrong.

  13. Interested – no idea, but they’re not acting as if Coconut Joy is winning.

NB these people are evil and everything they do is a lie, but they’re also incompetent twats. If that wasn’t the case, they wouldn’t be stuck trying to roll Kamala – easily the most wretched puppet to have ever been put up for major political office in the United States – in glitter.

  14. hmmmm…. from : https://www.nu.nl/verkiezingen-vs/6333388/elon-musk-aangeklaagd-in-philadelphia-wegens-weggeefactie-van-1-miljoen-dollar.html

In Cloggie, yes, about Philadelphia charging “Musk” with running an illegal lottery regarding his “one million dollar a day” Trump support excercise.

The usual dutch “neutral” leftie guff, although they had to point out in the article that it isn’t Musk who is charged, because it’s America PAC that actually does the “lottery”, Musk just finances them…

The real interesting tidbit is hidden right at the bottom of the article:
Seems Trump promised Musk he’ll be heading a “Government Efficiency Committee” if he wins….

    News to me, but… If that;s true,,,,hoboi… Popcorn Time…..

  15. Bloke in North Dorset

    Of course Trump is Hitler:

    Trump breathes air.

guess who else breathed air? That’s right, Hitler.

    ∴ Trump is Hitler QED

That’s the level of debate these clowns have stooped to.

  16. Grikath – if Trump gets back in the White House, there’s a 100% chance the great African American Elon Musk will be part of his administration.

    The salt must flow.

BiND – The election is nearly here. The Kamala campaign should be talking about how great President Kamala is going to be. Instead, they’re reduced to this:

DNC projects message tying Trump to Hitler on Madison Square Garden during rally

Their closing argument to the American people is literally just Drumph = Hitler. A billion dollars has been spent trying to get this dopey cow elected, and this is the best messaging the finest political consultants money can buy could come up with.

    It’s a bold strategy.

  17. John:

I’m two hours’ drive north of Manhattan, although this part of the state is “gentrifying” thanks to the influx of city people moving north. It’s turning the politics insane; in the previous election an avowed Democratic Socialist primaried the local Democrat legislator from more of the “all politics is local” wing of the part who had been in office since the 1990s and beaten thanks to the primaries bringing out the crazy wing of TEAM BLUE.

I’d say New York north of about Interstate 84 would be a swing state (Biden would have carried it by about 4 points), but that normal people don’t much care about the Israel/Palestine issue. The actively online TDS people of course exist and bully the discussion like everywhere else that’s not explicitly anti-left. But political discussion is dominated by government sector workers, the crazy wing of the Democratic party, and the equally crazy activist groups. They’ve terfed out the moderate TEAM BLUE elected officials over the past decades and are driving the state toward bankruptcy. Indeed, I’d argue part of the reason Cuomo wanted to extend lockdowns was to buy time to get Biden into the White House and get the feds to bail out bankrupt states like New York.

Sorry for the essay, but I hope that answers your questions.

  18. I should also add that the NYC people I know suggest that part of the reason for the prosecution of Adams is that he stopped the crazy wing of the Democratic Party from winning the mayoral election. They get him out and they can get one of the True Believers elected.

  19. ‘Musk he’ll be heading a “Government Efficiency Committee” if he wins’

    Grikath

Campbell-Newman was elected about 2012 in Queensland to improve efficiency in Queensland. He actually did so, sacking a considerable number of public servants.

It’s taken until now for the LNP to regain power. So I’ll be interested to see how Musk handles it.
