This is, you know, quite a lot

Amid a 40 per cent uptick in migrant boat arrivals in Spain’s Canary Islands, with close to 40,000 people reaching the archipelago so far this year,

So, what’s the PM doing about it?

Legal requirements will be eased for failed asylum-seekers, who will be able to apply for work papers after six months of residing in Spain, according to a draft of the reform revealed by the newspaper El País.

His government will also back a legislative initiative that will give residency to half a million illegal immigrants currently without papers in Spain.

That’s going to reduce numbers, right?

  1. “That’s going to reduce numbers, right?”
In government speak yes. Half a million illegal immigrants are now half a million legal residents.
You can pull the same trick with the unemployment figures.

  2. “Well,” said TTK, “They did it in Spain, and if you ignore the rapes, organised crime, squalor, and lower standard of living for all Spaniards, they didn’t experience much trouble. So I don’t see why we can’t do the same here…”

  3. ‘news.com.au/finance/real-estate/buying/more-to-it-hidden-reason-for-housing-crisis-as-aussies-turn-their-backs-on-apartments/news-story/bd072b61c344adbae097d129e7b31de7’

Interestingly the above states that the population of Oz has increased by 52% since 1995. But the housing problems are of course the result of we Aussies prefering free standing houses not apartments.

As I’ve said before, if the Republicans had won, Hitler would have gone straight into Spain after the battle of France, captured Gibralter, and moved into Tunisia and taken Malta from the north and the south.

Dunno whether he would have won though. His decisive errors were to invade Russia and declare war on the US. These actions were so stupid that one imagines he would have carried them out regardless.

  5. Bboy – it wasn’t just the excitable Austrian corporal tho, the entire German Staff catastrophically misunderestimated the size of the Soviet armed forces by approx 1000%.

Operation Barbarossa was based on the worst intelligence failure in history, and German arrogance made it happen.

The Krauts have learned nothing from this. Spanish fascism was a lot more realistic.

  6. If the Germans had control of Spain and Gibraltar there’s little chance that British efforts in Africa would have been possible.

Which means no pipeline of stuff to reinforce Russia with from Europe. Yes, they could still have used the Baltic route, but that was pretty spotty, with big losses. The US could also have used the eastern routes.
Would they have done so without Britain urging them?

Yes Russia had lots of men. So did Germany. Would they have been able to hold out until winter without American trucks? Maybe not. The Russians were pretty cr*p in that first push.

  7. M – the Russians were always going to hold out, because the alternative the Germans gave them was racial extermination. Hence, 20 million dead Russians and the total defeat of Germany, instead of a negotiated settlement with Stalin.

As Paulus noted, when it was too late to make a difference, campaigning against the national existence of other peoples was not a war the Wehrmacht could win.

  8. As I’ve said before, if the Republicans had won
It’s not really the “Republicans” who would have won. You have to remember why the Nationalists in the first place. The “Republicans” were actually various factions. Anarchists, several flavours of socialists, communists & regional nationalists. All squabbling amongst themselves.
Invading Spain & taking Gibraltar would have Barbarossa look like a tea party. Same problem that Nappy had. Only route into Spain from France is Hendaye>Donistia on the Atlantic coast. There wasn’t a continuous good road down the Med coast in the 30’s because in stretches the mountains come right down to the sea.. So they’d have a thousand kilometres of not particularly good roads passing over some seriously high ground in places. A very long logistic chain to secure against any dagos who’d got the pip over German occupation. And there’s no way the Germans could done an amphibious operation further south with the RN operational. Why Franco was content to be neutral. Germans were never a threat to Spain

Any chance the Pallies are capable of learning this?

  10. jgh – Till Armageddon, no Shalam, no Shalom.

Then the father hen will call his chickens home.

The wise men will bow down before the throne.

  11. Spain thinks they need 24 million immigrants by 2050 to sustain their economy, due to demographic changes found the world order.

They may be right. But it’s not likely to be popular.
