Democracy’s a bitch, eh?

I regret none of the climate policies we pushed in Ireland. But we underestimated the backlash
Eamon Ryan
From rural buses to solar panels, our Green agenda has been transformative. Yet, vested interests and big polluters helped to poison the well of public thinking

Eamon Ryan was Irish Green party leader from 2011 to 2024

The Irish Greens got wiped out at the recent election – one seat now, isn’t it?

Apparently the people did regret……

  1. “Yet, vested interests and big polluters helped to poison the well of public thinking”

Interests that are actually feckin *vested*. In this day and age! Not just normal interests, which tend to be unvested, although they’re bad enough. Can you imagine it? Vested!

  2. “Selling” the green agenda is easy up until the point people get a glimmering of how much it costs. Oddly the green party members never seem to understand those costs as they can’t get much beyond the first step of wind and sunlight being free.

  3. I’d recommend reading the book by Tom Segev – ‘Soldiers of Evil’. As there was a similar lack of contrition from people (Nazi Concentration Camp Commandants) who really next to the Greens were rank amateurs in the mass murder stakes.

  4. “… our Green agenda has been transformative. “

So was allied bombing of Hamburg, Cologne and Dresden, for similar reasons… ruination.

  5. andyf @ 11.04, the whole green boondoggle could be wiped out in an instant if the public were told:

Net Zero will cost UK £1.4 trillion* or £50,000 per household by 2050.

The reduction in UK CO2 will reduce global temperature by 0.00°C**.

*Current estimate (and we know that that is not going to go up is it……).

** Using IPCC’s formula for °C increase per million metric tonnes of CO2.
