New fear created

New York City police took a man into custody who they believe is connected to the early morning death of a woman who was intentionally lit on fire on a stationary subway train.

Fall asleep on the tube and someone sets you on fire. That’ll aid in stopping you falling asleep on the tube, no?

  1. I suspect that the man is mentally deranged or was on drugs. Or both. On top of that, very few details on the man has been released to the public. if that was not suspicious enough, the Guardian mentions Daniel Penny being acquitted of the negligent homicide of Jordan Neely.

  2. See one of the New York newspapers was straight in with the headline “Person dies after catching fire on subway train”.

They’re just trolling at this point, right? Right?

  3. I love how the Graun squeezes the Daniel Penny case into the last paragraph, because restraining a violent lunatic who was threatening to kill passengers is just the same as setting a sleeping woman on fire…

  4. Of course the easy way to avoid it, never take public transport.
Then, instead of being stabbed, shot, mugged, beaten up, raped or sitting in vomit with bad smells from the great unwashed while waiting for a train that probably won’t show up, all you have to deal with is the risk of car jacking, drunk drivers, drug drivers, uninsured drivers, cashforcrash Muppets and over zealous plod/councils trying to make up cash shortfalls by clobbering people going 0.1mph over a ridiculous low 20mph limit.

I know which set of hazards I’d rather deal with.
(Is why the anti car thing won’t catch on outside London)

  5. The underground in London is by and large pretty good provided you avoid rush hour. Rush hour is crap with the services crowded. But outside of rush hour, it is pretty good and works. Weekends can be crap if a service is not running due to maintenance.

Public transport outside of London is hit and miss. In some areas it is good and works well. But in general, outside of London you do need a car.

As with the NHS – excellent if you happen not to need it.

  7. Jon – This December, a jury acquitted Daniel Penny of criminally negligent homicide in the death of Jordan Neely, a homeless former Michael Jackson impersonator,

    His pronouns were HE/HE.

That woman died because there wasn’t a Daniel Penny around.

  9. Transit is getting increasingly worse in many places, on one of my office days taking the bus home from downtown the other day some people got on (without paying) holding what (if tv shows are accurate) looked like a crack pipe.
Thankfully there’s been some push back on the decriminalisation experiment and taking drugs in public though how much that will help at this point remains to be seen, somethings you can’t put back in the box easily

“ That woman died because there wasn’t a Daniel Penny around.”

And after the way he was treated the chance of another being around when needed has diminished significantly.
