Labour seems to be flailing, but keep faith: Starmer’s long-term plans are both radical and sound
Polly ToynbeeGoals for low-carbon energy, prison reforms, housebuilding and more are ambitious and nation-changing. They won’t happen overnight
Polly’s been doing this for decades of course. Every Labour administration is glorious. But it’s always glorious about the plans, not about the out-turn of those plans. We’re going to do such things, rage and blow against the winds. Never does happen tho’, does it?
“Goals for low-carbon energy, prison reforms, housebuilding and more are ambitious and nation-changing.”
Two of those are guaranteed to fail. I assume “prison reforms” means “letting violent scum go free” so there’s a chance of that one happening.
There has never been a Labour leader Pol didn’t think was perfection personified. Right back to Kinnock, Callaghan, Wislon ..
People love potential. Hence the obsession some women have with babies: they’re all potential and no history. They fall out of love with the babies when they turn into feral little shits, and have fresh ones.
One can see this pattern all over life. Governments are no different. It’s a close relation of “It’ll be different this time because reasons”.
‘True, both leader and cabinet lack the language of political lyricism to raise these winter spirits, but to use a Churchillism, they will “keep buggering on”…’
You would think someone at the Guardian would know the difference between “buggering on” and “buggering up”.
The goals will be nation-changing all right, but not in the way she thinks.
This solemn and serious cabinet
Lol. LMAO even.
What a cumb dunt.
She reminds me of a substance we used to joke in Chemistry lectures: polybutaketylone.
Ye Gods has even Murphy come up with anything to rival this piece?
This is slow government.
Not nearly slow enough.
This solemn and serious cabinet is not one for quick, bright eye-catchers, timed to hit 6 o’clock bulletins. The best it does may only emerge in years ahead
It’s already the worst government in British history by an enormous margin. I’d actually put it as the worst in human history. Even with an LLM I’ve run out of words to describe just how bad it is. Evil, witless and without even a scintilla of competence.
it fervently hopes for enough ripening fruit by the next election.
That’s almost certainly true, but in five years it could have done more damage to the country than Putin could ever conceive of
This long-termism requires an impatient and febrile electorate to take it on trust that the plans will work.
So you admit the goal is:
– The wholesale colonization of the country and its turning over to Sharia Law
– Alongside mandating Transgenderism for all children
– Seizing all private income for the state’s benefit
– Turning government over to the World Economic Forum and United Nations
In times gone by this could be considered overt treason I’d hazard.
That means Labour is ploughing on, undeterred by a mendacious opposition and its monster media. If Keir Starmer’s cabinet succeeds in most of its ambitions, it would set a nation-changing path.
The destruction of what most of us knew as the United Kingdom would indeed change the nation.
If Ed Miliband achieves 95% low-carbon energy by 2030, that gives us and future generations renewable electricity security for ever, regardless of global markets.
Newsflash – it cannot work – ever – and his attempts will leave us as the New North Korea. Anyone on board with his agenda is an enemy of the state whom Reform will need to seriously consider charging with treason.
If Angela Rayner builds 1.5m homes, she will have found the means, the planning laws and the people with the construction skills to carry on building exponentially through following parliaments.
All these diversity students are going to want to work on building sites? Are you that fucking stupid? building homes is an irrelevance to some degree while a city the size of Birmingham arrives annually
If Bridget Phillipson can get the great majority of infants into good wrap-around nurseries ready for school, their education and wellbeing prospects look bright: it is only now that the previous Labour government’s Sure Start children are emerging from their GCSEs with higher scores than the rest.
What the fuck is this obsession she has with nurseries? Surely the best solution is for the children to be looked after by a parent, not by state functionaries, especially in the era of DIE, Big Trans and Net Zero?
If waiting lists are falling fast, faith will be restored not just in the NHS, but in other public services’ ability to improve.
I am guessing more lockdowns on the way? once a criminal always a criminal?
If Shabana Mahmood at the justice department dares to seize on David Gauke’s upcoming sentencing proposals and James Timpson’s prison reforms, she may wean this country off the highest, most exorbitantly expensive and criminogenic imprisonment rates among equivalent countries.
Again without tackling immigration you can’t do much with the justice system. People are being released without accommodation because its being contracted out to house migrants. Until you tackle this, you’re pissing in the wind.
If new working rights stop gig-economy penury and let unions into workplaces to stop bondage conditions in fast food, care, warehouses and delivery, lives will improve.
Yes because the London Underground and NHS, where people who have got high wage deals have lead to copycat strikes are models for those in internationally competitive industries to emulate,
If relations with the EU can restore easier trade, work and travel, that too would yield growth, along with all of the above.
Good luck with selling that to the electorate – the abolition of the pound and unlimited EU migration.
I could continue but as Tim says, you got exactly the same throughout 1997 through 2005. Blair/ Brown was without a doubt the worst government in our history until the last few – but their long term impact has been unquestionably ruinous. The likes of Toynbee will need to be arrested and tried for treason. That much is very certain, if sanity is to be restored. They can no longer be treated as amusing.
She’s not a serious political commentator she’s a deluded Labour superfan. Labour are the best team evah and if they don’t win an election its cos ‘we wuz robbed’. If they fail in government ‘we wuz robbed’. She’d justify any policy decision and any outcome as long as it came from a Labour politician. Granted she was lukewarm on Corbyn, but she still wanted him to win and praised his manifesto.

“If Ed Miliband achieves 95% low-carbon energy by 2030, that gives us and future generations renewable electricity security for ever, regardless of global markets.”
Thats odd, I thought solar panels and wind turbines had fixed life spans, like all man made things……obviously they last forever instead. Who knew?
“The goals will be nation-changing all right, but not in the way she thinks.”
“Nice nation you’ve got ‘ere.
But we’re gonna change it into a different nation.”
“If Ed Miliband achieves 95% low-carbon energy by 2030 …”
Then we can keep warm by burning all the physics books that will have been shown to be wrong.
“… that gives us and future generations renewable electricity security for ever …”
Impossible things won’t happen so this is meaningless.
“… regardless of global markets”
Everything we need for the impossible crusade is made overseas.
@ Van Patten
Wilson was worse.
However many of your other comments are valid.
“if Angela Rayner … she will have found the planning laws …” – doesn’t she need to change the planning laws before she builds the houses, not as a consequence of doing so?
“If Ed Miliband achieves 95% low-carbon energy by (pick your date)” Air Traffic Control will have a nice sideline in supplying sausages and pork chops. Windfarms require CCGTs (or less efficient reliable generators) to back up 99.7% of their capacity and there are too many windfarms already built for us to get to 95% of electricity generated by nuclear, hydro, solar and windpower when the wind is blowing during my or Ed Miliband’s lifetime. The reliable non-green back-up for the windfarms will be at least 15% of supply.
The one-eyed viking really should have taken a viagra, taken another for the team, and satisfied our Polly’s lusts. Might have calmed her down a little.
