I’ve said for years a right wing government that actually wanted to stick it to the Left would enact a voluntary tax code that anyone who wished to pay more taxes could opt into. Lets say 30% basic, 50% higher, 70% upper. Plus higher CGT and IHT rates, say 50% for both. It can’t be that hard in this day and age of IT wizardry to make that work reasonably easily. Make it a minimum 3 year commitment, you can’t opt in and out at the drop of a hat (but you could sign up for a lifetime of you chose to). Then make a public register of everyone who has signed up, with names and rough locations and how long they’ve signed up for, so we could all work out exactly whether the Great and the Good are full of sh*t when they talk about the need for higher taxes and more money spent on schools’n’hospitals.
Cue consternation in Lefty land, because if there’s one thing they like more than other people’s money, its their own.

UK GDP went up every quarter in 2022, including the time Liz Truss was PM and immediately afterwards. Under New New Labour in 2024 UK GDP has gone down for the last two months for which data has been published
