Visibly Doctrinal – the new book

So there was that book, Invisible Doctrine, by Monbiot and Hutchison. Which, basically, said that neoliberalism – and by extention, the ASI. Madsen Pirie and, in spear carrier role, me – were the source of all modern evil.

So, an examination of the claim.

And a link here:

Available in Kindle and paperback.

Or the normal page here.

It can also be read, chapter by chapter, by subscribing to the Substack. Which is more expensive but there might well be more books this year on the same basis.

  1. A slight formatting problem when reading it on my Kindle. The first page of every chapter has the first letter of the first word displayed on a separate page, and distorted/blurred.

  2. Erm, what others? Given the v limited likely market having multiple versions seems a bit over the top….

  3. Kobo, Google, apple all of which don’t censor books. It is quite scary that the world’s biggest retailer does.
Google when Harry became Sally for an example.

  4. Tis being fixed. Maybe a couple of hours….now, whether that fixes the copy you’ve got, or you can download another without paying again?

  5. We now know why the problem. The tech expert – like tech experts do – uses Apple. So, kinky thing which had the first letter of each chapter in a big superscript special size. Which works in Apple, where it was tested. Not elsewhere.

Design choices by tech experts, see?

  6. I’ll buy it as a way of supporting you Tim.

Any chance of doing something about the ads in this site? They render it virtually unreadable on mobile (iPhone). Constant pop ups, half the page obscured etc. fine on desktop. Obviously don’t lose them if not, income matters, but if they can be improved that would be good.

  7. Don;t buy it just to send me money. Only buy it if you actually want to read it. There will be two or four more this year – I’m hoping at least. So, you can wait until there’s something you actually want to read if you’d prefer.

  8. Please do as Interested suggested- on my Chromebook the Google ads are a constant annoyance. Every new tab needs reloading just to see the content

  9. The cheapest way to get it is to sign up for a Kindle Unlimited deal @ 99p pcm. And then make a donation directly to Tim, as I will be doing.

What Interested said. The ads on my Android devices make your site very hard to read. And my Android ad-blocker doesn’t work with ads on your site. No problems on Windows, though.

  11. We’re getting some very odd adds these days.
The two on this page for me are for curing yourself of procrastination. Which sounds suspiciously like woo to me. It’s hard to think of a more woo resistant readership than Tim’s
I’m sadly missing the Tetas Vampiricas ads used to appear over on the right hand side. It may have been advertising breast reduction surgery for over endowed Spanish women. But the photography was spectacular & heartwarming. A quite wonderful start to the day.

  12. The suggestion has gone into the code monkey….

And the code monkey is Apple-based??? IMO, crApple is for perverts and fools…because crApple is more of a design company than a technology company. rant ends

  13. I’m a hybrid. For 39 years Windows based but for the last 9 Apple/Windows. Horses for courses. But I’m reading it on my iPad…

  14. @Theo

The ’90s called and want their stereotypes back. Way over half the software developers where I work use Apple. All the benefits of a UNIX system without having to manage the package updates yourself or manually faff with drivers. The OS guys all run Linux, but then their day-job is maintaining a Linux system… Aside from the C# guys who are writing stuff to run on WinServ and the Windows Client dude, the people who choose to run a Windows system are few and far between.

That’s not a formatting problem, that’s Tim using the Downside illuminated manuscript setting.

I hated Apple – until my wife brought home a MacBook Pro in 2013. It’s still running fine, and hasn’t required a reimage in all that time.

  17. Ads are still a nightmare Tim. It’s making it unreadable on my phone and not much better on the desktop. I can’t believe there isn’t a very simple answer – even if it means switching to a different platform (taking the domain name obviously).

There’s a fine line between quaint and eccentric and nightmarish.

Those of us who’ve been here since the beginning (or very early on, I came over with a link from the late PC Copperfield way back in 2007) will put up with it I imagine but if you’re trying to 1) spread the word and 2) make an income it’s mad.

  18. I’ll be buying the physical book, because it will allow me to post a review in public mentioning sundry fvckwits, including Murphy.

  19. Sample snagged me. Bought.

I’m using Safari. Hit the icon on the left side of the URL field, select Hide Distracting Items, then click within those obnoxious things to be rewarded with the immense satisfaction of them vaporizing. When eliminated, hit return, and resume reading.
