Border Force officers are to gain powers to stop suspected child sex offenders at airports and search their phones and laptops, as part of new “world-leading” laws to stamp out online child abuse.
Officers will be able to compel travellers to unlock their devices to be scanned on the spot for abuse images, if they have “reasonable grounds” to suspect them. Offenders face up to five years in jail if illegal content is found.
The law is one of four to be announced on Sunday by Yvette Cooper, the Home Secretary, to fight a tenfold increase in illegal online child sex images, amid a surge in AI-generated content.
Which ferret chewing on whose synapses led to a concentration upon airports? Anmd answer came there none. But this?
Anyone caught with the AI tools designed to generate highly realistic illegal child sex images will face up to five years in prison. Offenders convicted for possessing “paedophile manuals” which teach people how to use AI to create sexual abuse imagery will be jailed for up to three years.
The AI tools will be just like any other AI tools. So, umm, that’s a pretty wide ranging offence being created there. Similarly, a manual that used the word “ferrets” instead of “children” would perform the same education.
This is either simple idiocy or the creation of one of those ghastly offences that we don’t, in fact, want government to have the power over.
My expectation is that within a decade AI – of a certain level – will just be a chip on a motherboard. A chip that’s on every motherboard because why not? A law like this would mean that anyone walking through an airport with a laptop has such AI generating capability – 5 years!
Maybe one day they’ll get the powers to stop illegal immigrants.
Obviously, child porn is a very serious matter and needs to be punished severely, especially if it doesn’t involve real children. If it does involve real children and you’re rich enough to fund it, say, earning £450,000 pa for talking , and you can bung the pedo ring £35,000 every so often then the State will ignore the fact that it’s even worse and even reward you with a £50,000 increase to bring your pension up to a nice round £500,000 for the rest of your life. You have to work for the Labour Party propaganda unit though.
The State will only look for child porn on all your electronic devices. Promise. Cross my heart…
Only for one meaning of the word “travellers”. In our two-tier world the other “travellers” will continue to be given a wide berth by our brave short boys and fat girls in blue.
Anyone stupid enough to keep such images on a device, when there is plenty available to stream from the Interwebs deserves incarceration, as a danger to themselves.
You don’t need to wait for some future generation of tech; decade old hardware will support the local generation of images using year-old software, albeit slowly. A gaming laptop from the last couple of years would be better, but it’s all available today. Getting set up is a mildly technical process (more so if you don’t have a GPU), but that’s the only hurdle.
If it’s AI-generated, or even an actual drawing made with a pencil, where is the harm in looking at the picture? Some say it makes the paedos less likely to go out and act on their urges. It’s just porn. The proposed law, however, does real harm, chiselling away at the right to privacy. See also the way an accusation of terrorism, without foundation, can be used to remove the right of silence, the right of legal representation and any right against search and seizure we might still have.
Nobody in parliament seems to understand why they shouldn’t introduce laws like that.

More testicles means more iron.

I bet that there is a fair sprinkling of those that do understand but keep quiet for fear of being outed.
On a similar bit of fuckwittery, it is illegal in France to be holding a mobile phone in a car, even if the car is stationary and switched off. People are getting €90 fines for paying motorway tolls using Google pay on their phones.
The chips that do AI are GPUs. CPUs can do AI as well but not as efficiently. If you are talking about Apple Silicon, then you also have the Neural Engine which aids machine learning and other AI type work loads.
A year or so ago, I was able to download and compile Llama and Stable diffusion on a Macbook pro 14. The Llama chat bot was OK, just a bit more limited when compared to chatGPT. Stable diffusion ran fine and I was able to generate all sorts of images. Overrated in my opinion. I have since deleted both from my computer.

Indeed. Although even people stupid enough to have phones stuffed with nonce vileness can easily accidentally lose them forever and that’s OK.
These new laws will not result in a single nonce being banged up. They are a lame attempt to persuade the population that Something Is Being Done about child abuse and that it’s definitely not the case that favoured groups continue to get away with it. Honest.
That they can publicise this bullshit with a straight face shows the level of hatred and contempt in which we are held.
As others have said all computers can generate AI images. Those AI images can be of anything.
IMO this is just the first stage in an excuse for to access anyone’s phones and search for anything. It’s also not unknown for Plod to put child porn images on phones and computers. Giving them a handy excuse for nicking Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage in the future. If I was Elon Musk I wouldn’t be visiting the EU or the UK any time soon.
Just a little fantasy that occurred to me, what if every MP who goes into the aye lobby for this bill has their own phone exaamined? Can’t object, surely. If you’ve nothing to hide…
‘Officers will be able to compel travellers to unlock their devices to be scanned on the spot for abuse images, if they have “reasonable grounds” to suspect them.’
Reasonable grounds ???
“Sir, you look like you have kiddie porn on your phone.”
‘Officers will be able to compel travellers to unlock their devices to be scanned on the spot for abuse images’
What’s worse, penalties for child porn, or refusing to unlock your device? Double-ought zero will be ‘unlocking their devices.’
Just another excuse for harrassing innocent travellers who happen to belong to an unpopular category (I don’t mean hetero white males, I was thinking anyone who votes Reform or a Conservative who complains about IHT or a small business owner who has sacked staff to avoid going bankrupt or …).
Slippery slope
I remember back in 1981 watching somebody messing with an Eliza program on an Apple II, replacing many of the words with nookie, and running it to generate “AI porn”. Ok, now we go smashing down the doors of anybody owning anything with the power of an Apple II or higher.
Gamecock is intrigued by the task of creating scanner ‘for abuse images’ that doesn’t itself violate the laws.
“Offenders convicted for possessing “paedophile manuals” which teach people how to use AI to create sexual abuse imagery will be jailed for up to three years.”
How is some copper going to find a random bookmarked webpage (which is presumably where this is) or pdf? And should we really care? Are we going to ban pencils because of the awful stuff people could make with it? It’s probably quite disturbing for a child to see such a deepfake but if it never leaves some weirdos laptop, does it matter? How is it different to some bloke who knocks one out thinking about the 13 year old who lives next door?
I don’t get the airport aspect. Is there something about digital nonces that compels them to travel by plane with their ghastly creations instead of moving them encrypted over the ‘webs? If “think of the children” is a cover for general intrusion (which is presumably easier at the borders of jurisdictions than within) then it’s only going to work until they intrude on someone with influence from somewhere important, at which point the UK will rightly receive a proper and thorough kicking.
The people who support these sorts of laws are the people who call Trump a Nazi.
1. How do you tell if someone is a pedophile in an airport? Weird-looking face?
2. That would be everyone with an internet connection. Or a computer with a modern GPU.
3. That would be anyone with instructions on how to structure a prompt for an AI.

BBC presenter?

Viewing any image on the internet is quite likely to cause a cached copy to be stored in a temporary area on your computer. This allows clever lawyers to argue you’re guilty of ‘creating’ said image, rather than viewing it, which is often a more serious offence.
Now’t to do with pr0n, kiddie or otherwise. Everything to do with being able to arbitrarily process TPTB’s political enemies. And the process is the punishment, even if plod didn’t manage to find the stuff that they put on there.
