Irv Gotti, the chart-topping producer and music label executive who was instrumental in the careers of Ja Rule, Ashanti and DMX as the co-founder of Murder Inc Records, has died at the age of 54.

I have never – to my joy and relief, I think – heard of any of these. Which, given thatthe one of them is famous enough to have his death reported in the newspaper is a pretty big hole in my knowledge of the world. An appropriate hole perhaps, but one all the same.

I’ve heard of Ashanti. She’s another one of these …ahem… larger than life singing ladies.

Wouldn’t recognise any of her songs though. I seem to recall her winning a Grammy.

I had heard of Ja Rule. Just played a track on Spotify. Simple rhythm with some n****r mouthing off over it. The mouthing off was probably Ashanti. All been done before many times. Much better by MC Solaar in French. Maybe be Paris produces a more creative class of n****r?

Oh that was Ashanti was it? Thought it was the s***e. Me culpa. What it isn’t, despite the name, is good honest reggae. Don’t suppose he could hack that. Curious thing to call yourself. Trying to get himself some stolen cred?

You’re reminding me of the fuss and cheers here when we were told that Taylor Swift was visiting Oz.

As you’ve guessed, my immediate question was, ‘Who the hell is Taylor Swift??’

I thought it was a Japanese beer*. A bit sweet for me but does work well with Japanese food. (See also Singha beer and Thai food.)

*On consulting Google I find I was thinking of Asahi.

On the subject of music, may I suggest that Sir Very Kleir’s voice coach was indeed a “key worker”.

She taught him to drone in the key of C rather than B flat.

They each had at least one “song” which broke through to the mainstream; but most of their output was aimed at black Americans, so can be safely ignored.

I attend a Pub Quiz with friends and when the “Music” round appears ,I sit back and switch off as I have no idea who or what the questions are about. I always thought that Ashanti were a rather war like African tribe. Was there not an Ashanti war in the 19th Century ?
