Life expectancy in England is rising more slowly than in the rest of Europe, according to a new Lancet study.
Obesity, bad diet and a lack of physical activity are behind a decade of life expectancy stagnation, the researchers said, with stalling progress to tackle deaths from heart disease and cancer.
Scotland had the lowest life expectancy among the 20 countries analysed, followed by Wales and Northern Ireland.
However, England was the country that had made the slowest progress since 2011.
What do we all blame that on? Celts? Devolution? Fewer markets in healthcare? What?
Covid ‘vaccines’?
Isn’t reducing life expectancy Government policy? If it’s still going up they won’t be happy.
Very normal diminishing returns. Life expectancing can’t increase forever, it will eventually plataux, and as the first industrialised country ours will plataux before others.
By fewer markets presumably you mean access to the envy of the world.
Unofficial and more frequently official policies of “straight to the front of the queue” for new arrivals don’t help the wellbeing of the native population.
In the last three months of 2024, the government issued 1063 visas for Zimbabwean care workers, who brought 10,053 dependents with them. Importing sub-Saharans probably reduces average life expectancy – not to mention average IQ.
I suppose it’s conceivable that they are right about life expectancy as long as they don’t depend on data from the census. Or maybe more generally from the ONS.
But what are the chances that they have any sound evidence for their assertion about causes?
Next year they can blame President Trump of course.
Imported care workers probably increases their life expectancy. It’s being measured wrong anyways as it should compare cohorts. Emigrant from UK healthy people with wealth and moxy dying in their 90s in the US not measured either.
Bongo
Depends on the age structure of the dependents. With an average10 dependents a worker, it seems likely that grandpa and granny Unbwanga are tagging along. Zimbabwe life expectancy: 59 years.
“Scotland had the lowest life expectancy among the 20 countries analysed, followed by Wales and Northern Ireland. However, England was the country that had made the slowest progress since 2011.”
So, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are to be measured by f(LifeExpectancy). But England gets to be measured against the first derivative of f(LifeExpectancy)?
1. Sprobably all the stabbing.
2. Is this really life expectancy or is it mean age of death? They aren’t the same thing, I think.
Theo,
do you have a link for those Zimbabwean visa and dependant figures as if I told certain people they wouldn’t believe me.
Is the Scots problem all that whisky??
The problem with increasing life expectancy is that someone has to pay for it, as I consider when looking at my inadequate private pension.
So what do you do? Retire earlier on a smaller annual annuity so that you pay less tax (and continue to work cash in hand), or work for as long as you possibly can, get a bigger annuity, and lose more of it in tax?
Imported care workers switch your life support machine off.

Boganboy: All the heroin, stabbing, and shooting, more likely. I’d bet good money that parts of Glasgow and Edinburgh are dragging the average down significantly.
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
“But what are the chances that they have any sound evidence for their assertion about causes?”
No chance. They are making it up. The data simply doesn’t exist.
“Obesity, bad diet and a lack of physical activity are behind a decade of life expectancy stagnation…”
Then it’s down to personal responsibility isn’t it? If I make sure I eat well, control my weight and get down to the gym regularly, other people dying younger than I do aren’t really my problem.
UK government should ban forks and spoons.
New Brit’s don’t use them.
Just the knives.
Importing millions of progeny from generations of cousin marriage doesn’t increase average life expectancy. Actuaries astonished.
