Isn’t this rather the point?

  1. Getting a clout around the ear by an adult can alter the brain too I would suspect, yet there were fewer cases of ‘mental ill health’ when getting a clout round the ear was the preferred method of dealing with the little shits.

  2. ‘Verbal abuse by adults can leave children unable to enjoy pleasure and seeing the world as threatening, experts in child development and mental health will tell a meeting at Westminster.’

    Reporting on the future.

Can experts in child development and mental health be shipped to Mingulay?

  3. Of course it alters the brain. Unless the children have complete amnesia, they remember their experiences, which must mean that the brain is altered. There’s nowhere else that the memories could be encoded.

  4. As a child growing up in the 40’s , I was warned about my bad behaviour once, told about it the second time and if I had not paid attention to those ,the third reminder was painful. The result was a well behaved child who knew that actions have consequences. I brought up my own sons in the same way and have two well adjusted adults as a result. It was noticeable that visiting children were also better behaved when they realised that tantrums were not allowed.
