Quite, quite

The exemption for teenagers in consensual sexual relationships received cross-party support, recognising that “not all sexual activity involving under-18s is a cause for alarm or state intervention”.

The age of consent is 16. So, that’s what the age of consent is.

  1. “It confirms what many of us have long known: that often the most present threat to teenage girls are those older guys who just can’t seem to get a girlfriend their own age. You know the kind. The groomers. Guys who are 19, 20, older, who hang around the school gates in their Saxos and Corsas. In my home town, one actually went on the run with – or arguably abducted – a just turned 13-year-old girl. Others would invite underage girls to their shitty flats and ply them with alcohol.”

Rhiannon, have you ever noticed what we might call an ethnic or cultural dimension to this?

  2. Talking about consensual relationships, but no under 30s involved, tinternet rumours are surfacing about Jim Davidson having seen CCTV footage of TTK Shturmer and Lord Alli in an office somewhere.
    Dunno.
Could be nonsense or could be Camorons piggies.

  3. You beat me to it Simon.

But I’m sure Rhiannon was deeply affected by Adolescence.

Thirteen year old white boys, they’re the real threat.

  4. I don’t know if their is an ethnic aspect, but this sort of thing has always gone on. 20 year old wasters with their council flat and access to booze and weed. Teenage girls traditionally not being known for their great taste in men.

Not that 20 year old white men can get council flats anymore.

  5. Americans are saying that the age of consent is 18, forgetting the case of 9-year old Eunice Winstead marrying a 22-year old man, Myra Brown marrying Jerry Lee Lewis at 13, and Kay Reynolds marrying Bo Diddley at 15. At least there was some commitment in those cases. When Lewis brought his wife to Britain in the 50s, there was consternation and outrage. Not to mention Elvis and Priscilla …

  6. Granny knew best back in the old days.
Apparently the rule of thumb for the acceptable age difference ( absolute max) was half your age plus 7.
    (18÷2)+7 = 16.
    (50 ÷2) + 7 = 32.
    Sort of works

  7. Stop Press! Our Great Helmsman has announced that he’s become a woman, Lady Keira Starmer, and now takes the rudder as a Helmswoman.

Moreover she identifies as a sixteen your old woman in hopes of attracting more interest of a lascivious nature.

At least so I infer from the headline on the Second Leader in this morning’s Telegraph viz “Starmer’s Ambiguity”. But maybe the allusion was to something else.

  8. There is no American age of consent. America is 55 juristictions, and there are more where the age of consent is below 18 than where it is 18.

  9. Apparently the rule of thumb for the acceptable age difference ( absolute max) was half your age plus 7.

In the earliest recorded uses (late 1800s – early 1900s) of this “rule”, that age gap was described as the marriage ideal between man and woman rather than the more recent widest socially acceptable to pass an “ick” test.

I suspect that the further away, chronologically and geographically, we get from our “western” concerns, the wider that acceptable age gap will become. Rich old Roman men marrying 14 year olds was regarded as all round winning. 49 year old Henry VIII married 17 year old Katherine. 50 year old You-Know-Who married six year old Aisha.

  10. The age of consent for certain sexual activity is 18, so you can have sex at 16 but video it and you are in trouble
