The Institute for Public Policy Research had warned that 25,000 jobs in the car industry were at risk from 25pc tariffs, hitting Britain’s industrial heartlands the hardest.
The carve-out is particularly valuable for companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, as the US market generates most revenue for the carmaker.
The Government said the tariff reduction will save JLR hundreds of millions of pounds a year alone.
Isn’t that, in fact, part of the UK/India trade deal?
Are there really 25,000 automotive jobs in Britain ?
My Instagram feed is full of Yank mechanics complaining about the state of Land Rovers, Jags and Minis, how unreliable they are and how expensive the parts are.
Jaaaaaaaguar has gone all electric
Can’t see those selling well in the Land of the Free
Since Labour’s policy seems to be to de-industrialise us and import millions of primitive religious fanatic tribesmen I don’t really see how trade deals benefit us…
Otto,
“Are there really 25,000 automotive jobs in Britain ?”
There’s 11,000 employees at JLR in the UK. 6,000 at Nissan. My guess 3,000 each at Toyota and Mini. But then there’s all the jobs in the supply chain.
Whether there’s 25,000 at risk is another question. I’m sceptical. Politicians and a large section of the public have a boner for car making even though it’s in long-term decline in Western Europe.
Starfish,

My feel is that Jaguar are dying. They were an aspirational name for people who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s. But for the people slightly younger it was Porsches and Mercedes. Then it was BMWs. it’s why Porsche are making all those dogshit overpriced SUVs now. For all the people who grew up thinking 911s were cool in the 1980s and can buy a Porsche as a family car.
Why would I buy a Jag SUV when I can get a Lexus for less money, and the Lexus has a top 3 reputation for build quality and Jag are bottom 10?
“would I buy a Jag SUV when I can get a Lexus?” The Lexuses I’ve sat in have had feeble headroom. So have the Mercs. Why oh why? What a strange thing to get wrong.
Dearieme
SUV design is crap. Audi’s are really pokey inside too and the rear seats are disastrous: both headroom and legroom.
I used to own a Chrysler PT Cruiser. You could play rugger and kick up and unders in it, there was so much space.
Audi’s are really pokey inside…
My 6’7″ son-in-law is very comfortable in his Q5, but finds my Q3 much less so.
@Western Bloke – “Politicians and a large section of the public have a boner for car making”
even though they hate you using the things, won’t let you buy a new house with a garage to keep them in, and likely charge you for a parking permit to keep it on the street outside your house.
Charles, don’t forget the local authority Cartmans who when they do allow a garage, specify a size only fit for a Morris Minor.
