Hmm

When contacted directly by The Telegraph and asked whether the band denied any modern day slavery offences, Moffat said: “All denied. It’s all fake. No one is a slave and everyone is ok. We have begun criminal lawsuits against the persons behind this hate campaign.

“We don’t believe in social media trials – we only believe in a democratic system of innocent until proven guilty, with fact-checking and hard evidence.”

Sgt Tom Ottley, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “As part of our response to the initial incident, we identified several of the occupants of the van as being potential victims of exploitation offences. They are receiving specialist support and being safeguarded at this time.

Of course, I’ve no knowledge of anything at all here. But “criminal lawsuits” sounds like bluster to me.

  1. The logical conclusion of people who sing sea shanties is that they should be impressed onto one of HM’s 64 Gunners for five years.

Perhaps the people in the van were on the way to the Barbadoes to work on a sugar plantation.

  2. Otto, not only am I fairly sure we don’t have any 64-gunners, you made me wonder whether the RN can even muster 64 full-calibre guns amongst the entire fleet unless they count Victory and Belfast.

The story above is a head-scratcher for two reasons. WTF is going on, and who cares?

  3. 1. The photos show people wearing kilts, playing brass instruments. To play sea shanties.
    2. Apparently you need twenty of these. To play sea shanties.

Given that most sea shanties I’ve ever heard only require one concertina to perform, optionally plus voices, I’m curious about the massive lineup and instrumentation of this group, and of course its financial viability.

Modern slavery? To be forced to play sea shanties for nothing? I was expecting to hear about a van full of vibrancy, not crusties.

Bearing in mind current policing practice, I’m reading that as being held in custody until they make accusations of modern slavery. Being innocent is a serious crime these days.

  5. “However, The Sun reported that musicians working for the band were being kept in a farmhouse in east Devon and earning little or no wages.”

Seriously? So Iford Opera are going to expect a visit from plod because a lot of the musicians do it for free and stay in people’s houses when they come? Most musicians earn nothing, or maybe get sandwiches, beers, £50.

This is the problem with min wage laws. No-one wants to work in the sewers for free but lots of people do music for the fun of it.

Perhaps it’s money laundering, you know like Turkish barbers.

The rozzers are going around fake sea shanty groups.

  7. a democratic system of innocent until proven guilty

Yeah Glod! You don’t want that. The entire point of the justice system is to *DIVORCE* it from the whims of the demos. You can’t have people voting on whether to jug people. Yeah, he looks weird, send ‘im dahn.

  8. Who would have guessed that an in-depth operation and headline story about modern-day slavers would relate to a group of white Englishmen?

  9. Assuming the photo is actually representative of the band, I think this is an attempted distraction from the Rotherham et al. rape gangs and the government’s handling (or lack thereof) of that situation.

    “Look, whites do it too!”

  10. “Bunch of Hippies Have Internet Row. Police Acts Firmly and Decisively As Danger and Proof Non-existent.”

  11. The logical conclusion of people who sing sea shanties is that they should be impressed onto one of HM’s 64 Gunners for five years.

which would be one way to shut them up as RN didn’t approve their use as work songs in square rigging days (at least from my memory of Patrick O’Brian books -when Aubrey only reluctantly allowed their use for turning the capstan when he and his crew were working as privateers)
