The UK is becoming “the sick person of the wealthy world” because of the growing number of people dying from drugs, suicide and violence, research has found.

Death rates among under-50s in the UK have got worse in recent years compared with many other rich countries, an international study shows.

While mortality from cancer and heart disease has decreased, the number of deaths from injuries, accidents and poisonings has gone up, and got much worse for use of illicit drugs.

The trends mean Britain is increasingly out of step with other well-off nations, most of which have had improvements in the numbers of people dying from such causes.

The increase in drug-related deaths has been so dramatic that the rate of them occuring in the UK was three times higher in 2019 – among both sexes – than the median of 21 other countries studied.

So the UK is becoming more like the US in its pattern of deaths. Which means that it’s not the NHS v insurance based health care which causes the American pattern of death, right?

Dixon pointed out the improvement in UK death rates since 1990 slowed significantly during the 2010s, with the austerity policies pursued by the coalition government after 2010 a significant factor

Of course. Probably Fatchers fault as well. Cos’ any so-called austerity would gave an instantaneous effect on mortality rates.

Any research that says we had “austerity” is obviously bollocks.

International comparisons are hard to do well even if the researchers happen to be competent and honest – which is hardly a given in this world.

A demographic and geographic breakdown of deaths by drugs, violence and suicide would be both informative and deeply inconvenient so don’t hold your breath.

“A demographic and geographic breakdown of deaths by drugs, violence and suicide would be both informative and deeply inconvenient so don’t hold your breath.”

You couldn’t dream of addressing this claimed problem without knowing that. Unless maybe you already had the answer in mind before you counted the deaths.

Total mortality has gone up.
Interesting claim – unless you are comparing today with Enoch’s time [no, not Powell, Enoch the son of Jared], since then mortality has been 100%.

Now we get onto the standard Grauniad lie – that death rates improved during 2001-11 based on incorrect data from the bungled 2001 census {you know – the one that said Westminster had fewer adults in total (including spousres ans siblings of the council-taxpayer0 than the number that paid it council tax]. Brilliant piece of PR by/for Gordon Brown as the fixed error in the older age groups became a larer %age error as a few died eachyear so the error in the reported death rate increased each tear and showed up as a false improvement in mortality rates thanks to the “wonderful” Gordon Brown.
There are lies, damn lies, and new Labour Statistics.

Remind me again when this government abandoned immigration controls?

Correlation is not causation etc but interesting how these immigrants/refugees/asylum seekers largely coming from drug producing areas or areas of high criminality seem to have arrived at the same time

Plus this is the period that the police has abandoned community policing in favour of policing social media and worrying about mental defectives and hurty feelings
