Richard Murphy, Emeritus Professor of Accounting Practice at Sheffield University Management School and a former chartered accountant with KPMG, says the language in the resignation letter is “decidedly unusual”.
He did his training there, qualified and, well, was asked not to bother staying on? Is this “former chartered accountant with KPMG”? OK, now try again in general usage….
One of his vainglorious boasts is that he was told he “could make partner”. I pointed out that EVERYONE who joins an accountancy firm is told they could make partner.
He didn’t print that.
He could have been a contender.
And he’s an “Emeritus Professor” in the same way that Ed Davey and TTK are knights of the realm which given what I think of the three of them is actually quite apt…
He nearly got in at Hendon…
He nearly fought the vicious Chicken of Bristol.
Sheffield University Management School, or SUMS, is rather ironic, when his arithmetical ability is considered.
I had a quick browse through SUMS’ website, and all the piccies appear to be of overseas students. Lord Spud teaching British students is just plain self-harm, but isn’t letting Lord Spud teach foreigners an act of international warfare?
Jgh
Don’t worry. None of them ever attend classes.
‘Professor Emeritus’, or merely no longer a professor?
I think not being retained after training makes you “senior economist” this year, and entitles you to be Chancellor of the Exchequer. Maybe its not vainglorious if you are at least as qualified as the current incumbent?
I’m more highly qualified than both Spud and Rachel from accounts, and I’m bloody certain I could do a better job of it!

That’s as maybe, Norman. Does he have a second hand apron?

“isn’t letting Lord Spud teach foreigners an act of international warfare?”
I suppose encouraging other countries to adopt disastrous tax policies is one way to improve our international competitiveness.
Sounds familiar:

Big slip-up, KPMG! All your major multinational clients could have used someone to tell them how to run a business!
It’s difficult to forget, because Murphy reminds us often enough, that:
– he was Senior Partner of an accounting firm (three partner firm I believe) based, I think, in Downham Market, that white hot base of big business
– he was a Director of many companies. Here I don’t have much info. I do know he ran a company which imported Trivial Pursuit games into the UK from Ireland, but I don’t know the basis of this arrangement and how substantial it was. Apart from that (and here I’m guessing) I imagine he was a director of some of his clients’ companies, as a sort of financial adviser (eg to Farmer Bloggs And His Dog Ltd).
You can see why that level of high level commercial exposure might tempt you away from being a KMPG auditor or tax adviser.
His practice was in Wandsworth. Mainly luvvies – he edited the Writers and Artists Tax Handbook for some time….
“he was Senior Partner of an accounting firm (three partner firm I believe)”
Indeed. The ‘Senior Partner’ bit he always trumpets: that there were only two other partners he never mentions. There were, I think, 11 other staff when he and his partners sold it.
He was quite content that two of the staff were made redundant as part of the acquisition by the other firm.
This is really interesting, You’re a very skilled blogger. I’ve joined your feed and look forward to seeking more of your magnificent post. Also, I’ve shared your site in my social networks!

I’m more qualified than Murphy and Rachel from Customer Support put together (but I expect that she would want a noise-proof sanitary screen between them). So what? I couldn’t do a worse job {some people could but I am numerate and my parents brought me up quite well]
