Sir Keir Starmer’s Chagos “surrender” deal will fund tax cuts for Mauritians, it has emerged.
The Mauritian government has said it would use almost £500 million in payments under the terms of the Chagos agreement to pay off its national debt.
This will allow ministers to abolish income tax entirely for 81 per cent of employed Mauritians, and raise minimum salaries.
Rachel wouldn’t have let us keep the money anyway – tax cuts are for foreigners.
Mauritius is a favorite travel destination for us South Africans. If Starmer wants to make it cheaper and better for us, I’m behind him.
So what do they intend to do with the other approx 98% of our cash TTK has committed to giving them. Start their own NHS? No, they’re not that stupid.
There are going to be some seriously rich Mauritian politicos within the next couple of years.
Have they got a space programme ?
Must admit if I was a Brit, I’d hang Starmer.
But of course I’m a white-haired old reactionary.
Michael, quite a few people are. Allegedly. You might or might not need to be religious but you probably need some assets…
And John, some seriously rich lawyers…
If Rachel and Keir are looking for some cuts to fund other priorities*, then the ASA would be a good place to start – https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5y5ez8189lo
* The clients of the state, obviously – not those that make a useful contribution.
Near the equator, so ideally placed for a space launch site.
“If Starmer wants to make it cheaper and better for us, I’m behind him.”
A bit like Lord Alli?
And John, some seriously rich lawyers…
It would be most unwise of me to speculate whether that would include any special Friends of Kier (FOKs?) so I definitely won’t go there.
I understand that the Mauritian government is advertising for Brits to retire there. Based on the political situation, would you need to learn Mandarin?
I’m skint. If I retire to Mauritius will its government look after me with all the cash the UK has just given it?
How long will Paradise last?
Ten years, tops.
I note that David ‘Mastermind’ Lammy is off in Spain, negotiating a similar ‘deal’ over Gibraltar. Shall I start a sweep over how many billions we’ll have to pay the Dagos to take it off our hands?
Clearly Mr Starmer and Mr Lammy are doing a fine job of tidying up the UK’s legacy properties around the world.
If either of them is spotted en route to the Isle of Wight, residents should perhaps start panicking…….
