That’s rather the point

A Treasury spokesman said: “The UK remains highly attractive.

“Our main capital gains tax rate is lower than any other G7 European country and our new residence-based regime is simpler and more attractive than the previous one, whilst it also addresses tax system unfairness so every long-term resident pays their taxes here.”

Fairness is rather in the hands of the person who has to hand over the cheque. Or at least, one of the relevant views of fairness is in those hands. And they’re leaving.

THere’s a very old joke about a group of 10 blokes who go out every Friday night for a session in the pub. They all put in £5 (It is very old). One day, one of the blokes, a shop steward, says its not fair as some of them are rich-the accountants-and some like him are really poor. So he proposes the rich ones pay a bigger proportion of the kitty. The rich ones find the session is getting expensive and so bugger off. The Labour government keep raising the alcohol duty till the shop steward finds he can’t afford to go out drinking. On his own, because everyone else has buggered off…

“Our main capital gains tax rate is lower than ….”

But it’s not the main rate… It’s all the other ways you try to steal from the rich fleece the population for all they’re worth, plus VAT, because…

Unless, as pointed out in the article, you’re part of the Party Machine, and keep your nose clean, Comrade!!

Grikath, one of the golden rules of tax = lots of little taxes add up to lots of tax. And another – make taxes as invisible as possible, hence no indication of the VAT they’ve just stolen from you for that fridge you’ve bought……..

UK is the land of windfall profit taxes.

All else is intrigue.

The UK remains highly attractive.

Was it worth stealing Abramovich’s yacht?

The Russians weren’t here because they were Putin’s mates. They came here hoping their personages and money would be safe from Putin. The theory was: buy a house in London and a football club, and maybe Putin won’t throw you out of a window or steal your yacht.

And then we robbed them.

A lot of these nondoms are from countries we could potentially fall out with in future, the UK acting like a typical Third World klepto regime to the Russians (a country we’re still not technically at war with) won’t have filled them with confidence in the British idea of “fairness”. British courts routinely permit convicted foreign rapists to stay here because “human rights”, but apparently it’s ok for the government to rob you based on your nationality? Cool, cool cool.

The reality of that story is that the rich bloke probably stood more than his equal number of rounds without complaining and gets really pissed off because they make it compulsory.

I’m sure Tim has comment on here a number of times that Americans give more to charities and that there’s an inverse correlation between the level, of taxes and charity donations, but I can’t be bothered to put the effort in to find it at this time of night.

Grikath is spot on, as always – it’s the little daily nibbles that annoy most, not the yearly big chomp!
