Surely the point of watching any women’s sport is to see skill and nice legs? Well, perhaps not shot-put or weightlifting. They’ll never compete on power but there’s no reason why the girlies can’t be as skilful as the boys.

Agreed, Norman. Some of the Lionesses are rather fetching. For the same reasons I much prefer to watch women’s tennis and athletics.

I don’t get dismissing women’s sport on ability either. The Lionesses are the best in their division, category whatever and that’s an acheivement. And, as with cricket, genuine incompetence has pretty much been driven out.
Millwall v Doncaster for a place in the play-off will get far more interest than a match between 22 world class players divided randomly into two teams.

Skill and power go together. A cross whipped in at speed requires far greater skill to defend, or put into the net than one looped across slowly. A shot hit weakly at the top corner of the goal requires far less skill to block than one fired at high speed. By definition a less powerful game of football will be a less skillful one, because it operates at a slower pace, and therefore gives everyone far more time to react.
Which is more skillful – hitting a 70mph half volley for 4 through the covers, or doing the same to a 90mph one?

Which is my point. The best female tennis player should get the same rewards as her male counterpart. Ie the square root of bugger all, because she’d be somewhere around No 1000 in the world. The only reason a women can earn millions playing tennis is because she is benefiting from sex discrimination. An equally competent man gets nothing, just because he’s a man. If thats not discrimination on the grounds of sex I don’t know what is. Same goes for all sports, barring ones involving horses, where woman can compete directly with men, because the horse is doing the really hard work.

While caring little for women’s football I did gain satisfaction from seeing warm favourites Spain being defeated in view of the performative defenestration by their football federation of former coach Luis Rubiales.
My only regret is that the player responsible for the faux outrage, going so far as to file a criminal complaint for sexual assault, was not in their squad as it would have been fun watching her miss the decisive penalty.
