The White Lotus star has been accused of promoting eugenics and playing into sexist stereotypes with her American Eagle jeans advert, which pays tribute to her “great genes” while the camera zooms in on her breasts and bottom.

The advert begins with the 27-year-old telling viewers: “I’m not here to tell you to buy American Eagle jeans,” as she leans forward in her chair while the camera lingers on her chest.

“And I definitely won’t say they’re the most comfortable jeans I’ve ever worn, or that they make your butt look amazing,” she continues, with the camera zooming in on her bottom as she walks over to a mirror.

The reaction:

Rachel Tashjian, a fashion writer for The Washington Post, claimed the advert was “regressive” and “tethered to the values of another time”.

“It is strange to see a brand like American Eagle go in this direction. Should teenagers be served a vision of sexuality and fashion that feels so regressive?” she wrote.

It’s almost like a journalist believes teenage girls are unaware of the allure of their own hips and arse. Sheesh.

My favourite complaints are the ones claiming she’s a fascist for involving herself in an ad which a play on words involving jeans/genes. Hitler would have done the same, see.

Marvellous tits – her legs are a bit short for my taste. I hope she doesn’t read this. She’ll be devastated.

Hadn’t heard of American Eagle jeans before, or Sydney Sweeney for that matter.
So it worked.

As someone old enough to recall feeling slightly uncomfortable about a barely pubescent Brooke Shields advertising jeans the 100% wholesome Ms Sweeney is a breath of fresh air – even if I’m now definitely too old to say much more!

P.s. the late Barbara Windsor also had a great bum and very decent legs although hardly anyone ever noticed.

A story as old as time: middle aged, decidedly mid, woman is upset by attention paid to attractive younger woman.

This is why PR is like 20 times more powerful than ads. You run the ad, a little, maybe also get some people to write a few pieces saying how “controversial” is and then all the journalists get mad, they tell everyone about it, and everyone hits YouTube to see the ad.

Like the Clarkson ad for his beer that got banned. Yeah, if you say “fuck” it’s not going to get on TV. Don’t tell me Clarkson’s team didn’t know that. Spend a little money producing an ad, submit it, get it banned, and everyone goes and checks it out on YouTube. I reckon that ad cost less than £5K to make and has 1.1m views.

I watched the advert. Not impressed. The jeans look crap to me.

She knows how to use them.

I watched the ad too. Of course I did. Yes, nice tits, shame about the GenZ long face, but my wife’s arse still looks as good as that in her Uniqlo wide-leg jeans and she’s now in her mid 60s. Not boasting, just reporting facts. The Japanese often stay extremely well-preserved.

This is an ad featuring an adult woman advertising adult clothing. Why are they going on about 10 year old Brooke Shields and sexualising children?

Check their hard drives.

Just a wild guess, but I assume Rachel Tashjian is surpassingly homely and has a moustache Tom Selleck would envy?

Without the makeup she’s quite plain; always take them swimming on a first date. If it wasn’t for her busty substances nobody would bother.

Busty substances? Pete and Dud, right?

Not the utter munter you might expect. Just a typical Progressive Woman, not unattractive (clearly fancies herself in those selfies) but an obvious ball-breaker (if heterosexual) and guaranteed no fun in bed. Ishoos. Jealous that she’s on the decline whereas Ms. Sweeney rather obviously isn’t. Yet. But would never, ever admit it.

Yes, it’s amazing the number of women who see 40 approaching and suddenly start moaning about the oppression of the male gaze.
E.g. Scarlett Johansson recently.

More like the oppression of no longer receiving the male gaze…

Before I knew about this ad, I saw reference to it at Insty (over the weekend?) in which a meme compared a jeans ad from a few years ago, all woke and fat-acceptance, with and image from the current ad, all fit, busty model (did not know it was Sweeney). What these outrage journos are willfully ignoring is the clothing companies have for some time been doing the woke body positivity thing – and apparently it hasn’t been selling clothes very well. Clothing companies want to sell clothes – geez – who’da thunk it. With the old regime out of power (for now, in the US anyways), some companies are dipping a toe back into the kind of thing that worked to sell their products way back in the bad old days.
