You don’t say?

A Silicon Valley “tech bro” has scrapped offering staff unlimited paid holiday after complaining “B-performers” were abusing the perk.

That must have come as a surprise.

And probably pissed of the A-performers no end. At one level at least, at another level they’re probably glad to get them out of the way.

unlimited paid holiday is only a small step beyond “Work From Home”.

WFH might work well with some good staff but the will be plenty of B-performers that abuse it.

It’s a bit like Cambridge city council officially moving to a four day week – it can only end in tears (for the poor council tax payers of Cambs at least).

I’d have thought that a hot hipster company run by a Tech Bro wouldn’t have any B-Ark’rs!

When you are small, the founder(s) can take care to hire great people. It’s only later when the company becomes large that the seeds of it’s demise are sown – people are brought in without as much scrutiny and they bring their “experience” of large corporate culture. The death spiral continues as these new staff hire more people like them and so the quality of staff diminishes.

“Unlimited PTO” is an accounting hack.

It means that no PTO is accrued, therefore it isn’t a liability on the balance sheet.
