Sir Keir Starmer’s homelessness minister has quit the Government over claims she evicted tenants from a property she owns and then increased the rent by hundreds of pounds.
Rushanara Ali was accused of “hypocrisy” after putting up the rent within weeks of the previous tenants’ departure, despite having previously vowed to “challenge unreasonable rent increases”.
Both she and Tulip are of Bangladeshi background (and birth in Ali’s case). Bangladeshi politics is not a clan sport – as we can see when it plays out at volume in Tower Hamlets. As you all also know I write for a Bangladeshi newspaper. Conversations with the editor there are fun – antinomianism is the name of the game over there. Of course the elite – the political elite – don’t have to follow the same rules. That’s even before we get to at least some of them thinking the plunder is the point.
Um…. as far as i can work out all Ms Ali did was raise the rent on a 950k house. Somehow this is incompatible with being a homelessness minister. Exactly how it incompatible is not explained. I think i’d rather have someone who has a experience of how the housing market actually works for renters and or landlords.
If you have the misfortune to have an Asian as a landlord, you have my condolences. Much of the anti-landlord legislation is basically aimed at trying to rein in Asian Rackmanesque tendencies, except the PTB would never admit that of course. Nasty landlords are always called Steve or Simon, never Abdul or Ravi.
TTK is one mixed up geezer. A lawyer who appoints alleged crooks or liars to his cabinet. Liars I can understand because he wouldn’t notice that or think it unusual, but crooks….
It wouldn’t be a majority of Bangladeshis voting for a Bangladesh candidate would it (see also Muslim)? Once elected, pressure is put on the human rights lawyer, who was chosen as leader because he is so malleable, that diversity is the key to give them ministerial appointments. This, rather than ability, is seen as the priority. Unfortunately for the taxpayer, the other political parties all seem to follow the same path.
In the US homelessness has pretty much bugger all to do with housing costs. Homeless people almost all have serious mental problems or drug and/or alcohol problems. The lefties like to pretend that it’s because of greedy builders or landlords. Sorry, but the bloke walking around yelling at invisible people isn’t just a few quid a month short of a nice apartment, something rent controls would solve.
@Esteban – in the UK, “homelessness” means anyone who is in temporary or unsatisfactory accommodation as well as people sleeping on the streets. What the UK calls ‘rough sleepers’ are also almost always people with serious mental problems or drug and/or alcohol problems.
Additional gallows humour was provided by the hapless Rachel defending her colleague while at the same time admitting she wasn’t aware of the facts.
@ Tim
Did you mean “isn’t a clan sport” or “isn’t a clean sport”.
In my ignorance I might have thought that it *was* a clan sport – one clan against another
We need to disbar the foreign born from public office and public sector employment.
They’re not reliable and we don’t want them here.
Rushushuh Alibongo can go and be a slum landlord in her native East Pakistan.
It turns out Ms Alis has previous convictions:
And readers here won’t be surprised to learn about her career:

Ahhh Labour and socialists if they didn’t have double standards they wouldn’t have any standards at all
Socialists and muslims both have double-standards – ‘do as I say, not as I do’ – so they are natural bedfellows.
@ BiND
One of my friends got a PPE degree on one year’s work: did a year’s Maths, decided he wasn’t good enough at Maths, switched to Physics, ditto, then switched to PPE and got a PPE degree after studying it for one year.
My attitude to anyone who got less than a first in PPE is coloured by knowledge.
@Steve – “We need to disbar the foreign born from public office”
Foreign born like Boris Johnson?
