A UK family have been killed in a car accident while holidaying in southern Portugal, local authorities have confirmed.
Domingos Serrano, 55, his wife, Maria, 51, and their 20-year-old twin sons, Afonso and Domingos, died when their car collided with another vehicle on Saturday on the IP2 motorway near Castro Verde, in the Alentejo region.
Also killed in the crash was a 19-year-old woman reported to have been the girlfriend of one of the twins, along with the 26-year-old driver of the other car involved.
The family were reportedly on their way from Faro to Mourão, in Portugal’s south-east, where they regularly spent holidays.
At a guess the other driver was being a complete twat.
That’s not actually a motorway. Single lane either way. Erm advanced A road mebbe. Fast and straight and no blind corners or anything (next town down and the road we use to go to Faro as well). Crank up to 90, 100 km, no worries. But when some twat coming the other way decides to overtake badly…..
Sigh.
Given how incompetent, stupid, and inattentive many drivers are it’s a wonder so few people are killed in car crashes. I make an exception for the many drivers in Cambridge who cope with cyclists – even the many arseholes amongst them – pretty well. But then in Cambridge during the day you are obliged to drive slowly because of the street layout (blamed, according to taste, on the Angles or the Danes).
If you haven’t driven among Queenslanders you can have little idea of inexcusably incompetent driving.

That struck me as an odd expression and the we read their names and they appear to be Portuguese or less likely Brazilian.
Then we get:

Because that would run counter to the Establishment narrative that states that a person born in a stable is a horse. In fact a person just has to walk into the stable to become a horse. It would also invite the question – what is a Portuguese family doing living in the UK? Which would never do.
Sounds awfully like a bad overtaking decision. We drove 400kms each way for a friend’s 50th over the weekend, similar sort of road – single lane each way but a decent highway – and some of the overtaking behaviour we saw had me clutching my pearls in horror. Very sad if that was the case.

‘cos not many people reading a British newspaper would be interested, a motor accident far away, not involving anyone we are likely to know.
Sounds like something between LQS2 and HQS2. HQ: straight with good sightlines. But this was an overtaking collision, so that suggests LQ no shoulders, so no space for manoeuvres.

Let’s check Streetview…. Google calls the Castro Verde bypass the N123, so that’s no help, but OpenMap calls it the IP2, and I’m more inclined to trust them. But it appears to be D2 not S2. Dual carriageway, so how can somebody come head-on overtaking?
Hold on, those road markings are wrong….. WTH! Is this correct? There’s an S2 two-way road next to a parallel S2 two-way road???? But even then, the IP2 is HQS2 – it’s got hard shoulders, so it takes some massively impressive god-awful driving to overtake into a head-on smash. link
On that road, (They would have been coming up IP1 from Faro, turn at Ourique. OK, mebbe they used the motorway, then came off at the Castro Verde exit, then along IP2 toward Beja from either) where there’s a junction coming up then it’s two lane either way. Where there’s not a junction coming up it’s one way each way. Junctions are like motorway ones, no cross turns etc. What can happen is someone trying to overtake in one of thsoe two lane bits and not completing until it shrinks back down again.
Maybe it’s Iberian & not just Spanish. The “whatever the consequences I must be in front of you” style of driving.
Incidentally Tim. What makes you presume it was the other driver was culpa? I’ve seen them drive exactly the same with a car load of kids & a bebé a bordo sticker in the back window.

No one ever mentions the overtakees in these incidents, who also frequently behave like twats and speed up while being overtaken, as if their masculinity is threatened.
