Six police officers were shown to be involved in arresting the man, with one appearing to repeatedly strike him on the head.

Lady Gohir, the chief executive of the Muslim Women’s Network UK,

Why did we give this person a peerage and therefore a lifetime legislator?

That’s a new spelling of “shyster”, but nominative determinism FTW!

I used to think the HoL was a good system that generally worked because hereditary peers took their duties seriously, they even provided the opposition to Maggie when labour imploded. It probably started before Blair but his constitutional vandalism has wrecked it as a serious institution and we now need a more accountable second chamber.

I don’t think direct elections will work but something like the Bundestag or US Senate where regions are represented equally not on a per capita basis to counter the over representation of urban areas.

And we need an England parliament as well.

Doesn’t appear ever to have had any kind of job which wasn’t paid for by us to tell us how bad we are.

Bloke in North Dorset: Far be it from me to suggest that this was the plan all along. Traduce the Lords’ reputation to such an extent that even conservatives are calling for its abolition. Why the hell can’t we kick all the phoney lifers out and put the real Peers back in?

“phobia” is irrational fear. “islamo-” is the adjective prefix refering to Islam. “Islamophobia” is the irrational fear of Islam. Why on eath do the need consultants and advisors for this? That’ll be 3.5m quid please.

And we need an England parliament as well.

No, no, no! If the answer is more politicians, then you have asked the wrong question…

“Islamophobia” is the irrational fear of Islam.

Then islamophobia doesn’t exist, because all fear of Islam is rational.

‘wrongly accused a police force of Islamophobia’

So one could correctly accuse a police force of Islamophobia. Just not this time.

I’m with Theo. It is impossible for fear of people who all have a copy of a book which says they should kill you to be irrational. Indeed, it would be irrational NOT to fear them.

Is there a word at the opposite end of the spectrum from ‘phobia?’ Philia doesn’t work for rational fear.

Apols, this was yesterday, but I’m not sure fear is necessarily the right word. We shouldn’t fear those who mean us ill, it risks putting us at a disadvantage.
