Sebastian Purcell is an associate professor of philosophy at Suny-Cortland in New York, where he researches ethics, Aztec philosophy and mathematical logic. He is the author of Discourses of the Elders: the Aztec Huehuetlatolli, a First English Translation and most recently, The Outward Path: The Wisdom of the Aztecs

The Aztecs were unable to repel a far smaller bunch of invaders and as a result quickly lost their entire culture.
I wonder what the professor believes we should be learning from their experience.

The Aztecs were colonisers from what’s now the southern US.

As someone else pointed out on X, Oxford University predates Aztec civilization by several hundred years.
One of the more irritating defnces that I came across with regard to the Aztecs concerned their lack of wheels.
It ran alongnthe lines of “They had no pack animals and hence there was nothimg to pull carts and thus there was no need to build usable roads.”
Just imagine what a game changer the wheelbarrow would have been to their civilisation.
Also draggingtheir poor victims up to the top of the pyramind for a bit of the old heart-cutting-out would have been a lor easier with ropes, pullies and a little trolley.

To be fair, their “civilisation” lasted longer than the EU or the welfare state will.

Yarp. You can just see what a bubble the old parties and old media are in, when they talk about Farage and Reform, and you look at them polling 34%. They’re the closest thing to the mainstream. If you lived in the 1980s, Reform policies were normal policies, of both main parties.
The Conservatives completely failed to do as they should have in 2005 and elected a real, Conservative leader. Who then centralised the party to get more people just like him as a permanent fixture (see “A list”). Everything since then has been Conservatives shifting the government even more towards The Guardian, as their voters gradually realised that the Conservatives are the SDP but with nicer suits, and switching to UKIP and Reform.

Preach. It seems a very long time ago we were glad to see the back of Gordon Brown’s government. Surely even a soggy wet like David Cameron will be an improvement, we thought. Haha.
Our expectations of the Tories were low, but they managed to limbo dance under them.
The last 28 years have seen a process of the British government radicalising its own citizens.
