We’ve made a few small tweaks to the comments section!
-
You’ll now see a badge next to real users (we had to tackle some code injection issues).
-
We’ve added nested comments, so you can reply directly to someone’s comment.
-
You can now upvote or downvote comments — it’s just for fun and works like a ‘like’ feature, but it won’t change the order of the comments.
Enjoy the new features and keep the conversation going!
Any changes or suggestions, please drop them here.
Expect a few bugs… you can email worstall@echion dot co dot uk

FIXED:
If you’d like to upload an image, click the picture button but you have to also enter a comment.
Usernames can now be 2 characters.
Font size is not tiny.
In the Polly thread below are some test posts.
Reply button works
Edit button works
Up and down vote doesn’t seem to
Nor does picture attachment.
Not sure the “link to comment” is very useful. Perhaps use that to attach links ?
Getting there, I’ve never been too bothered by the lack of an edit function, but it is dead handy.
The page is much more responsive. I am usually on my tablet and it struggles with input boxes ( in general, not just here ).
Great stuff !
Here is a picture in a post. You have to make a comment as well as a picture 🙂
A comment as well as a picture
It appears as a thumbnail when I write the comment just below the box, but doesn’t seem to attach.
Is there something else I need to do ?
Or perhaps sign in ?
nope, i just write and post a picture. Maybe your tablet?
Highly likely
I’ll try on the PC later.
Been out all morning. Just back from pub so bit pished.
🙂
Really like the changes though. New toy to play with.
see what happens
Bloody Hell, that’s biowarfare standard.
Are they by any chance related?
Candidly
Why in God’s name would you want to do such a thing?
I wandered lonely as a spud
I like the new comments layout in general.
However I’m not sure the threaded replies will work very well for the large number of comments that can happen – it makes it much harder to see which comments have been made since last time I looked at the page. Time (and Tim) will tell I guess.
We have implemented a system so when you return all ‘unread’ comments appear in yellow. We are privacy conscious so this will depend on the browser and or cookies.
Doesn’t seem to be working here. Probably something I’m blocking, so will have a look when I have a moment.
No sign of a yellow indication even when I use a browser with no content blocking installed. Firefox in this case.
Don’t read yellow comments.
Try again
Feel free to email me at the address in the main article and we can play with some tests 😮
Nested comments at last!
Cor, brilliant!
My email is above – but i just bought a house in Cyprus!
It rejected my absurd bogus email address so I had to invent another. Is this is going to tax an old boy’s memory? Maybe not: it seems to have memorised it.
Looks like it should be good.
This is a great improvement, thanks.
It would be nice to improve the ads as they appear in iPhone screens – fine on my laptop, but on the phone they are extremely intrusive (they break up posts, take up the whole screen etc). If it can’t be fixed fair enough – nice to think Tim is making some cash out of the blog at last.
If I were he I would gradually migrate to Substack – perhaps by posting there simultaneously with here for a month or two, with a note saying please move to Substack by X/X/25. Thereafter he could continue to post the headlines and first lines with a link to Substack. I think he’d do very well out of subscriptions, and Substack has proven itself to be a defender of free speech.
Please refresh your cache – ads should no longer be displaying.
I’ve done that on both my PC and iPhone and it’s made no difference. Like I say, I am glad Tim’s making a few quid so the inconvenience isn’t that important – it would just be nice if it was less interfering.
About chuffing time, Worstall.
Ooh. Nested comments. Bold choice.
What he said.
I’m probably missing something but, for new comments, I might find this link easier than trying to search down each time looking for the most recent time stamps:
https://www.timworstall.com/comments/feed/
Where’s the preview gone? Or not needed as this is it? Preview for html tags was useful, you could spot instantly if you hadn’t closed any.
Problem with accepting names?
Testing edit. That’s good that you don’t need to log in or anything to use it.
You don’t need to use HTML tags – look at the greyed out strip below where you’re writing, and they’re all there. Highlight the relevant passage, click on whichever function
you wish to apply, andCheers, yes, it looks like most of what you’d need is there.
Edit: Looks like a space counts as a letter when inputting a name (for the minimum of three letters)
The feed link would be great if you could extend it to more than 20. Mostly it’s fine, but occasionally it would be helpful (to have more) when the site’s buzzing.
Testing the name issue – is the problem just two initials. Edit: Yep, three letters rather than two is fine.
Are you using RSS for comments? I can look at this. Can you email me richard@echion. co . uk?
I can look at how to make this work. – R
No, just hitting refresh on the
https://www.timworstall.com/comments/feed/
link on a PC browser. That’s it. I’ve often found it useful (first off) rather than refreshing comments on any number of other different pages (and probably especially so now given it’s no longer fully sequential). But if coming back a few hours later, the 20 can easily be exceeded. I don’t know how useful or easy it is to put a drop down for number of comments in that context (if not doing the same larger number for everyone), or if anyone even still uses that link as it’s no longer advertised anywhere on the other pages as it used to be? Don’t worry if it’s complicated. 🙂
I’m finding the font size and colour difficult to read, but maybe that’s just me. Now to try to get a valid email to work, which it hasn’t so far. Edit: email working now
Give me suggestions 😀
Break out the bubbly, an edit function at last!!!!!
Excellent, Richard T. Well done!
[ Waits for live notification bubble. ]
Its coming.
Ah I don’t think it displays webp, jpg should be ok?
Test
Hello Richard
So, having sobered up, I have tried this out on a PC.
The picture attachment works. Great.
I also notice another difference. On my Android/Firefox tablet the little box with text options doesn’t appear. Doesn’t borther me too uch.
But this is all excellent.
