Instead of the JavaScript trick, I sometimes find that refreshing the page a few times breaks the paywall and the article is readable.
For some reason I cannot read the comments in a Windows PC but can on my tablet.
Obits occasionally work like that. They are the only things worth reading in the DT these days anyway.
Yes they’ve tightened, but you can still bypass it.
You now must “Allow JS” to load the page, and then “block JS” to show the content.
Strange how the paywall tightens even as the worthwhile content diminishes?

Can’t say that I’ve noticed that, as I gave up on the Telegraph ages ago.
What I have noticed, however, is that I can’t access this site if my VPN is on. It’s odd. Even if I’m connected to a node in Britain I get stuck in a doom loop of waiting while my IP is checked. Turn off the VPN and I’m connected in a flash. Like I said, it’s odd.

Norman: I think I’ll swerve that one, but I just went to https://archive.is and searched for ‘telegraph.co.uk’. That brought up several pages from today’s edition including the front page. The links on the page seem to work too.
TG, Orlowski put me onto it (he’s a pal, lives up the road). Archive.ph is great but you can lose vids, etc.
How does a server know that my browser is using an ad blocker, and how do I stop my browser sending that “I am using an ad blocker” information?
Yeah, same thing with the Torygraph. Java disabled just loads a blank page. Says something about journalism supported by advertising revenue, doesn’t it? Apparently these days, it doesn’t.
For UK news I’ve switched to the Express. Not bad. At least it’ll have the stories & I’m not interested in opinions. The Mail? Jezus! “The newspaper read by the wives of….”. Endless stories about slebs I’ve never heard of & wouldn’t want to with copious cheesecake. Plumbing depths of triviality never before explored. Do Mail journalists have to breath that oxy-helium mix makes your voice go squeaky?

You can then add an icon on the taskbar of the browser to just click to see the archived page, or right click a link and choose “Archive” to do the same.
It’s also worth looking out for subscription offers, especially at Christmas time. I got online access to The Times for a year for a tenner.

Actively avoiding paying the asking price is immoral. You don’t want to pay? Don’t read.
And don’t say it’s not worth paying for because it’s clearly sufficiently valuable to you that you’re prepared to organise your theft mechanism.

They don’t put it on sale, not really, it’s a voluntary subscription. If the DT genuinely wanted to stop me reading it, they could, very easily. They clearly don’t care that I do – meh…
btw, all I do is switch JS off by default, all sites always, and then allow various toys (umatrix or other) site by site if I consider that it enhances. Why would I switch stuff on for the DT when it works just fine with my default settings (switched off)? If it wasn’t for threads like this I wouldn’t even be aware that others couldn’t access it.
[ btw, the Times manages it perfectly well, because it’s a proper paywall, not a *pretend* one. ]

No, I’m not joshing. DT wants to be paid for their content and you’re choosing to steal it instead.
The idea that, basically, “They’re not very good at enforcing it so screw them” isn’t an argument based on morality. It’s just opportunism.
Be moral, or don’t be. But don’t gussy up one for the other. And don’t expect to be able to argue from a position of morality in the future because you would have sacrificed that.

As I’ve already told you, they don’t ask me to! Which is sort of necessary isn’t it – to ask someone to pay for something that they are offering, if they want to try and establish that kind of relationship, be it contractual or even voluntary.

Tell that to the newspapers. They want it the other way round when it comes to search engines and indexing, which is the root of their difficulties. A strict paywall would prevent people accessing the content, but also would prevent a lot of traffic being sent there by search engines as nothing would be seen and indexed.
I was actually paying for the Torygraph for a couple of years. But eventually it’d got so poor I decided paying them was only encouraging them & cancelled. Since when I’ve been using the JS wheeze to occasionally grep it. My reaction to being locked out again was “Oh. That’s 5 minutes of my life I won’t be wasting.” almost with a feeling of relief.
Newspapers; things you buy to read on a train journey, or can pick up to read in a nice café. The content no sooner read than forgotten, occasionally useful for ads or reviews. Then I was no longer commuting, the nice café closed, a good internet connection, well informed blogs aplenty…
PF: I don’t even get that. For the past few days, I’ve been seeing a totally blank page even with scripts permitted. As far as I’m concerned, the website is down.

If that happens to me (or if they actually start asking for money in order to view), then – like BiS – it’s a very easy decision: it’s certainly not worth any more than any other web site (ie, which are mostly free to view/paid by ads)?
Charles is right, it’ll be the scrapers they don’t want to lose. Which means accepting some “normal” dilution rate. If they go full on (proper) paywall, like the Times, that’s the trade off they’ll have to make.
