A point of information here

Activists from New Zealand detained in Israel after they were removed from vessels carrying aid to Gaza are being held in poor conditions without access to water and legal representation, their families have said, as dozens more passengers from the Global Sumud Flotilla were set to be deported.

You don’t get legal representation if you’re held by the US border police either. So?

Meanwhile, in a lengthy post to X, foreign affairs minister Winston Peters accused Swarbrick of “faux moral outrage” and said the members of the flotilla were “headline hunting” and had been told not to go.

“Now we have to spend all of our time and taxpayer money to solve their self righteous self inflicted petulant problems,” he said.

The Groan presents this as if this is a Bad Thing™.

“Environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg, who was also arrested, told Swedish officials that Israeli forces were subjecting her to harsh treatment, including being held in a cell infested with bedbugs…

Sounds to me as if the bedbugs are getting the raw end of that deal. Perhaps PETA should lobby the Israelis?

They should consider themselves lucky they’re not being subjected to slow starvation for a couple of years in a deep underground tunnel.

The bit about no access to water sounds unlikely to say the least. Warm showers maybe.

They are still yet to realise that the IDF saved their lives by stopping them. Bit of gratitude please.

>You don’t get legal representation if you’re held by the US border police either
My understanding was that you do, provided you’re a US citizen or you’re being held for a matter other than your intent to cross the border.

Further, there’s Sixth Amendment issues if they just hold anyone indefinitely, and while to my knowledge an exact number has not become case law, anyone detained at a border should be passed to either ICE or the normal criminal justice system* in a timeframe ideally under a day, and definitely under a week.

* at which point the usual right to an attorney applies.

The Constitution doesn’t apply to non-citizens.

Where does it say that?

It does and it doesn’t.
For example, non-citizens can have their right to bear arms infringed despite the second amendment, but anyone under the United States’ jurisdiction has a right to a timely and fair trial as per the sixth amendment. The latter is kinda common sense, as the matter being decided may well be “is the accused a US citizen or not?”.

You have to look this kind of stuff up on a law-by-law basis.

Environmental campaigner Greta Thunberg, who was also arrested, told Swedish officials that Israeli forces were subjecting her to harsh treatment, including being held in a cell infested with bedbugs, not providing enough food and clean water and allegedly forcing her to hold flags for photographs.

Boo fucking hoo. Hamas would have just killed them. The Tunebugs are preening for Western white woman. This shit wouldn’t play anywhere else in the world. Western white men see them as idiots going where they knew they shouldn’t. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

And how is it that the poor dear was able to speak with Swedish officials?

as he sits in a cell right now, in a cage crammed in with many other people … he has been without water and legal representation

How can ‘family members’ know this? Who told them?

BWTM: Eva Corlett tells a huge f***ing lie . . . twice. There was no ‘aid.’ And no ‘humanitarian aid,’ whatever that is. Guardian agitprop.

I recall seeing a clip of a man throwing 2ltr-size(ish) bottles with indistinguishable contents into the sea in the hope of them floating to shore in Gaza as “humanitarian aid”.

Thunberg will reportedly be among more than 70 people of different nationalities to leave Israel on Monday.

Deportation is such a Western white women punishment.

Shipboard mob is halted at sea, removed from their ships and interred in Israel. If their crime warrants those actions, it warrants a few years in prison. Sending the children back home enables them to do it again in a few months.

We are just four months removed from Thunberg doing it before. Cirrusly, she does it again 4 months later, and you are just going to deport her? Again?

Y’all expect a different result this time ?!?!

They’ll make her fly out again. The process is the punishment.

I’ve watched “Nothing to Declare”, you don’t get legal representation if held by the Auzzie or NZ border police either.

Winston Peters does not take prisoners when it come to green bullshit. He is one of a few plain speaking Politicians that I know of. He has recently had a Palestinian support demonstration outside his home, as well as someone someone breaking his front window with a crowbar in the last few days.
