Rather similar to the Captains of British Industry demanding government legislates to force investment in them.

Watch the cases of domestic abuse rise dramatically if this was ever implemented.

Leftists love to use the term ‘desert’.

Here in the US they’re trying to push the idea that if you have to travel more than 1/2 mile to a pharmacy you live in a ‘pharmacy desert’ – and that you’re being deprived of ‘your right to healthcare’.

For the rest of us we either drive or take the bus so . . .

Not if you’re sick enough to need prescription meds.

No, each person should be assigned their own Medical Professional Caretaker who can take care of such things for you, at state expense. Because health care is a right!

Ah, but the other way . . .

Decades ago, during another “there aren’t enough free lawyers for all the crims” crisis, our local bar ass put forth the idea of making all lawyers volunteer 5 hours each month to representing the indigent. Got lots of quick public praise.

We pointed out that the average Mergers and Acquisitions guy wasn’t going to do the single mom with the DWI charge much good, plus the malpractice rates for all lawyers in the jurisdiction would go through the roof if we sent M&A guys, or collections guys, or divorce guys, out to rep the defendants.

So we pushed the idea that maybe – maybe – if there was a need for such lawyers, then all of society ought to pick up the tab through taxation. Yeah, that one won.

We didn’t start the fight, we weren’t looking for more lawyer money, but that’s where it went . Because that’s what makes sense.

Simple answer, “all lawyers volunteer 5 hours each month to representing the indigent” or hire a stand-in.

Perhaps the purpose was less to provide for the best imaginable defense for the alleged perp, than to prevent cases being dropped for lack of representation…
