X and Substack are platforms, where people can post comments visible to the public. They have a duty to respond to complaints, and remove illegal content. They have no duty to analyze content and take action before posting. In general, and by design, they have no responsibility for content.
Ryan’s complaint is about content. For which X and Substack have no responsibility. She asks if people (yeah, she deems herself ‘decent’) should stop using them. IF people stopped using them, would that end ‘racism’ and ‘misogyny?’ Well, no. So what’s the point? The world is full of ‘racism’ and ‘misogyny,’ “Stop the world! I want to get off.” Is the cure for ‘racism’ and ‘misogyny’ to HIDE from it? That’s what she advocates.

Substack, which has up to 50 million users worldwide, was found to be platforming writers espousing white supremacy, Holocaust denial and antisemitism, including an activist who described Adolf Hitler as “one of the greatest men of all time”. It’s all very 2026, isn’t it? Or 1936.”
Well, no, because they also host US liberals, libertarians, and communists.
The pertinent thing in this is that Substack is about subscriptions, not ads. Ad-based platforms optimise for what advertisers want, which is the 18-34 demographic. Which is why they tend to lean towards US liberals, because that’s the politics of that group. Advertisers will also just exit platforms which don’t supply that, or which means their ads will be next to someone writing about how today is Adolf’s birthday. They don’t want the association with it.
Here in Ireland there are two stories doing the rounds.
First one involves the Social Democrat party flouncing off X because of it’s toxicity. This happened after they have been wittering on about misinformation etc. Then one of it’s TDs (MPs) misunderstood the agenda of the US attorney general with that of Epstein and crowed that our ex Justice minister (who happens to be Jewish) had entertained Epstein in an official capacity. 2 weeks later, they were back on X to post a grovelling apology after the lawyers got involved.
The other included the right on, from media to left wing politicians all getting behind an Irishman who was detained by ICE “despite having a valid work permit” and being held in a terrible detention centre. Some people on X did some digging and found out that
a) Our hero went across on a Visa that expired 16 years ago
b) Shared a name and birthplace with someone who had skipped out of a court appearance in Ireland for dealing ecstasy.
c) Some of the media (DM) picked up on this and today we learnt that not only did he do a runner on a court date, he left his twin daughters and their mother to fend for themselves.
The left really do know how to pick them
