Amanda Seyfried: ‘People walking out of our film means we’re doing something right’
The Mamma Mia! star and the Oscar-winning composer Daniel Blumberg on creating The Testament of Ann Lee – a tale of sex, suffering and faith

People might also walk out because it’s shite of course.

Not that I have any intention at all of checking to find out.

Where I used to live in Austria, the next door village was dominated by a family called Seyfried. Made very nice wine.

Coincidence ? I think we should be told.

ps Has anyone else noticed that with all these Hollywood stars these days, one recognises the name but not the face nor recall what films they were in ?

She made her name as the daughter in ‘Mamma Mia’ I think. Hadn’t seen her in much since.

The only thing I recall seeing her in is “Jennifer’s Body”, back when Megan Fox was big. She did a pretty good job there.

Dominated?

Was it the middle ages, and did they live in a hilltop castle from which they could brood over the apple-cheeked townsfolk?

Or was it just a gimp-thing?

Well, there’s something for the makers of ‘Starfleet Academy’ to try, once they’ve exhausted their latest tactic: “Stop trashing us or the beloved IP gets it!”

I’m not even going to waste money by trying to watch it in the first place. Just the tagline is enough to tell me it’s tedious dross. So, they aren’t doing anything right which seems par for the course these days.

From the director of The Brutalist, a musical and features a graphic childbirth scene. Perhaps not for me.

The Terriblegraph notes that this hasn’t had much Oscar interest, which is probably because Hollywood is defying Orange Hitler by giving a host of nominations to Sinners, a half-decent vampire romp with a near all-black cast,

If it’s too shit even for the Oscars, it’s got to be really shit. And not in a “so bad it’s good” way.

Actually, a bit weird for the Oscars.

The people at studios know what pushes the buttons of Academy voters, and they make films for them. Top subjects are: racism, the holocaust, films about making movies and people with disabilities (but not full retards). Films get crafted for Oscar voters. Cheaply made, then if they win awards, they can make some good money from an audience that still think “Oscar winner” means something. Which is a declining thing as audiences got wise to how they’re all these sorts of movies.

The Oscars are an utter joke now. And audiences don’t need it because they’ve got various websites collecting critical and audience votes that are more reliable.

From Wiki:

Seyfried expressed support for socialism in 2025, saying, “How about our agenda is take care of each other? Socialism is a gorgeous idea, and I know it doesn’t work perfectly, or that people understand what the word actually means. For me, it’s taking care of each other. If I have more money, I can spend more money on other people.

Real depth of understanding there.

There is a reason even the few actors that become rich don’t stay that way.

“The Housemaid’s success, she says, derives in part from an under-served demographic – that niche crowd known as “women” – being offered a film that doesn’t involve superheroes, horror or taking kids to the cinema. With the right story and cast, “people will show up for movies. Especially about women having the last word. Women taking control of their lives. Women showing up for themselves and each other. They didn’t come for the gruesome nature of it. They didn’t come necessarily for the sex. They came for the collective experience of the characters – and for themselves. Also,” she adds, with typical forthrightness, “thrillers are f—— fun.””

The problem with this argument is that well, if there’s an under-served demographic, why aren’t you, and all the other actresses that whine about this, pooling your collective resources, setting up a production company and both doing something you feel good about, and making a shitload of money?

The truth is women just don’t go to the cinema. Women like stories about romance and family stuff, and they like musicals. And once TV came along, TV could do romance and family stuff because it’s cheap to make. You see a decline of women in leading roles once TV came along. They made soap operas, family dramas. The audience for women going to movies became date movies, musicals and taking the kids. And over time, horror grew as an interest.

There’s a huge audience for superhero movies because superhero movies are better on the big screen. Horror, because it’s better on the big screen, and cheap to make. The average historic drama or something about a family in Ohio, you might as well watch it on the small screen.

The reason The Housemaid did well isn’t serving a genre or an audience demographic, but that audiences particularly liked it. There’s a thing with box office called attrition. A movie’s highest week is generally the first week, but if audiences hate it, they tell their friends it’s shit and the box office will decline fast. If they love it, they tell their friends and other people come along. And the decline is slower (and very occasionally, it rises). So, Batman vs Superman (hated) dropped about 55-70% per week. Compound that and it doesn’t take long for a $200m opening week to become $10m a week. The Housemaid had about a 20% attrition rate, so even though it only opened with $30m it was still making $12m a month later. The reason why Titanic made so much fucking money is that it only had about 5-10% attrition, so it was still making a lot of money 6 months later.

Cinematic or TV ‘sex scenes’ are soft porn for women. I find them as erotic as a toilet roll…

Why would you spend cinema money for that? The French and Italians used to make tons of movies like that.

hey didn’t come for the gruesome nature of it. They didn’t come necessarily for the sex.

The women who went to see that movie absolutely went for the sex and gruesome nature. Women love ‘true-crime’ – the crazier the better – they’re all over this sort of shit.

She looks gobby, stringy, dour, sour, miserable and, Gawd help us, like she thinks ‘sassy’ is a good thing.

I’d cross the road to avoid meeting her eye.

Look, if Amanda Seyfreid is showing flesh and getting down, the film must be really bad if people walk out!

She doesn’t show hers but Sydney does. Amanda looked really good in ‘In Time’. Since then she became a little bit thinner and now looks more like one of the white liberal women causing all the trouble with ICE.

I saw the Housemaid, the two main things to make it worth seeing are Sydney Sweeney’s tits.

That depends Amanda.

Was the intention of the people funding the movie to annoy people or to make money?
