If you actually want to know what’s going on in the region Google Iran Saudi Proxy War. It’s like the old cold war where America and Russia were supporting various groups. Both Iran and Saudi want influence over the region. Iran does more of it, but Saudi aren’t immune. The revolution in Syria was about groups being supported by Saudi and Turkey as Assad was a pal to Iran.

You are good on incentives, WB. However, here you are assuming there has to be some material incentive for such action, but incentives can be non-material – particularly with nutjobs, islamic or otherwise.
Islam is 700 years behind Christianity in the civilisational development thing, and has the distinct disadvantage of not having a singular management structure that can call time on the whole jihad thing.
You have to go back to the incentives of 500 years ago. Who were the richest people? The people who owned lots of good agricultural land. If you wanted more wealth and power, you raised an army and took their land.
Even as late as the 1930s you see this, as Adolf invaded the East. Not Denmark or Switzerland because the land is shit. But Czechoslovakia, Ukraine. The Generalplan Ost was about kicking people off the good land, driving them north or killing them.
When did that stop in Europe? It’s mostly down to the Green Revolution. Inorganic fertilizers, tractors and so forth raised yields. Land became worth less, not worth the cost of stealing. The aristocracies lost their power.
And religion isn’t the factor. Turkey, Tunisia and Morocco are Muslim countries but when was the last time they were in a war? Because there aren’t valuable natural resources. There’s some industrialisation and tourism. The better correlation of violence, lack of democracy and human rights is natural resources. You can also compare Venezuela with the rest of South America. Why isn’t it democratic, but all of its neighbours are?
