Ah, well now

Yes, everyone loves a sailor and etc. But:

During a trip last year she allegedly behaved inappropriately towards a senior naval officer after becoming heavily intoxicated during an evening in the officers’ mess, according to the Times.

A Royal Navy captain in charge of one of Britain’s nuclear-armed submarines stepped back from his duties over his relationship with the MP Joani Reid, whose husband faces allegations of spying for China.

The married senior officer was investigated by the navy last year over his contact with Reid after the messages, described as inappropriate, prompted an assessment of a potential blackmail risk, the Financial Times first reported.

The investigation, launched because of “due diligence”, found the pair had exchanged messages described as flirtatious.

This is the MP whose hubbie is under suspicion for spying for China. Quite the very pair, eh?

Didn’t really have to look at the article to know which party.

After months under the waves with a hundred sweaty matelots, the Captain was probably glad of any attention.

There’s a drama starting on the TV, being trailling with the line “we may soon have a Chinese asset running the government”. “soon”?

Vaguely related. I see that Eric Swalwell is trying to stop the FBI from releasing his files, where they detail his banging a Chinese spy for years.

He thinks it might hurt his chances in the California governor’s primary. Currently none of the contestants is polling above 20%. In the jungle primary, the two top vote getters get to contest the election in November. Ironically, the two leading candidates are Republican.

Also ironically, a debate among the top four running was cancelled because there were no Persons Of Color amongst them. The top polling candidate is British. Of course being a ferriner didn’t hurt Arnold Schwartzenegger. Look for fireworks around the June primary.

He has a certain ‘look’. Not saying that he plays for the other side, but I wouldn’t be surprised if helps them out when they’re busy…

He does have a certain look. One can imagine why his wife might be a tad frustrated….

Quick, get the fan and the smelling salts, I’m about to faint. And loosen my corset!

Anyone describing anything as “inappropriate” should be kicked sharply up the arse and told to stop talking like a primary school teacher.

It doesn’t say much for the quality of the RN officer class that someone who has been placed in the very responsible job of commanding a nuclear submarine deems it perfectly acceptable behaviour to start flirting with a married woman who got spectacularly drunk at a party, while being married himself. If he’s prepared to betray his wife’s trust, what else is he prepared to betray?

David sent Uriah into a frontline trench. Uriah caught a whizzbang and David got the wench.

That one?

I only understood the reference to David and Uriah because it was used as a plot point in the Sherlock Holmes short story “The Adventure of the Crooked Man”. Amazing what can suddenly be useful later if you can remember it and make connections.

I’m afraid you’re well out of date there, Tim. The glory that is the ECHR/HRA enshrined the ‘right to a private life’, which shifted the goalposts significantly when it came to relationships. Matters are now judged against the Service Test, which assesses whether operational output has been diminished, and if not, crack on. Naturally, the judgement is subjective, and I had some real run-ins with the Admin types who took a very touchy-feely view of things.

I suppose it depends on what was really meant by “everyone”. Something that was common knowledge in the bloke’s particular branch of the service, or even across the RN as a whole, could still be a major embarrassment if it got into the newspapers. He would only be invulnerable to blackmail if the truth was known to absolutely everyone whose opinion might affect his career or personal life, not just his immediate circle.

The Navy doesn’t have Messes, does it? Wardroom, surely. But the Guardian, of course.

As my mate James used to say (after some marital trouble):

Back when the BBC made decent documentaries they did a great one on the Perisher course for commanding submarines … Very good watch if anyone hasn’t seen it. Used to think it was harsh that if you failed you’d never go below the seas again, seemed a waste of their expertise, but in retrospect it’s probably the only way. Those who fail (on camera too!) seem to take it pretty well, all things considered.
