Their results of those tests revealed something never before documented in British history. Lavinia and Michelle are twins who grew together in the same womb, were born from the same mother, and delivered within minutes of each other – but have different fathers.
Heteropaternal superfecundation – the vanishingly rare biological process to which Michelle and Lavinia owe their existence – is both a mouthful to say and a mind-boggling concept to grasp. It happens when a series of very unlikely events occur at precisely the right time. A woman has to release more than one egg during the same menstrual cycle. She has to have more than one partner during her fertile window. More than one egg must be successfully fertilised, with sperm from different men, and the resulting embryos need to survive long enough to become babies. Michelle and Lavinia are twins and half-sisters.
So we’re saying that Mum was shagging around then, are we?
It might have been one of those parties to which I never seem to get invited.
Well…
What I don’t understand about this is: Why was it a ‘news’ item on the Today programme?
Actually identifying paternally unrelated twins is rare. Very rare in fact. Like, 20 known cases rare?
That is newsworthy…..
…if a bit rough on the two dads (assuming they didn’t know about the mother’s ‘superfecundation’).
Well one of them gets lucky: he’s just discovered he’s only on the hook for half the child support. Interestingly, when my previous career overlapped into legal matters I discovered DNA paternity tests were practically the norm. I wouldn’t be surprised if this has been detected before in private DNA tests.
From memory it won’t make any difference to child support. The state takes what I can regardless of number of children.
I listened to the story on the Toady programme and believe that the twins are 49 years old……… And after now seeing a picture of the two ladies in question I would be mightily surprised if any bloke had paid child support…..
Why, are they both from the big-bottomed community?
The steatopygian community, please!
From reading the article I do get the impression that the mother had almost no recollection of who the girls fathers might have been. Had she managed to ovulate 3 eggs we could have had a case of superfecundation triplets.
It seems both dads are losers – but the taxpayer will be the biggest loser.
Never forget that Al Beeb have always been banned from advertising on their network, except of course when advertising their own content………
If you listen to local radio rather than Radio 2, there’s no more advertising, if you class celebrities plugging their new shows/records/products as advertising.
It’s corrupt. It just means the people promote their mates at the cost of the taxpayer.
Sperm comes in several varieties. There are disruptive spermatazoa with twisty tails whose function is to block the sperm of the other bloke.
So yes, very rare, even if shagging around.
We’re probably talking about ovulation a few days apart rather than gangbangs.
Sperm can live up to five[?] days inside a woman. But once a conceptus is formed, the female body activates three mechanisms to inhibit an additional pregnancy: [1] A complex hormonal cascade starts that inhibits the release of new eggs. [2] Cervical mucus thickens, forming a mucus plug, sealing the uterus to sperm. [3] The uterine lining changes, becoming unreceptive to any subsequent embryos. AIUI, for all three of these mechanisms to fail for five days is possible but highly improbable. So, probably, the mother had unprotected sex with at least two men in a very short time…or even a gang-bang…
I think such sperm competition is limited in humans, though well known in lesser mammals. I.e., it exists it humans, but it’s not much of a factor.
Are we not discussing “lesser mammals” here?
Apparently Lavinia is a “blockchain entrepreneur”. If it’s the same Lavinia; can be hard to tell those pictures apart.
So not just a scammer, but one that doesn’t keep up with the latest, since she hasn’t pivoted to “something something AI something” yet.
What’s her husband’s opinion?
Bwahahaha…
Very good!
One wonders why they were tested.
Probate court?
Shits ‘n giggles.
It says in the linked article that their mother had claimed that someone called James was their father and after their mother got dementia, Michelle wanted to know more:
They were about 45 at this time, so no courts involved. Spoiler: Michelle was right and James was not father to either of them.
Gamecock loves stories with happy endings.
Two for the price of one at the sperm bank. Shaken, not stirred.
Sperms banks?
Tim says: No, that’s too much. Stop.
I thought you believed in free speech, Tim? Y’know, the ‘right’ to offend?…
Sure. I also believe in property rights. My gaff, my rules.
Go and be vile elsewhere. Don’t be vile and be welcome here. The definition of vile is – my gaff – mine.
The other explanation is that dad is a chimera. Very rare indeed, more likely she is a whore.
