One of the problems with these new layers of politics

Andy Burnham has a credible plan to return to Westminster “within weeks”, his allies have said, with the Greater Manchester mayor expected to use a byelection fight to set out a new agenda for government.

If gives someone like Burnham a job – and an income – from which to plot for the centre. So too with Zack and being a London AM. He gets £60k a year for the AM jobe, a subsidy to the Green Party job.

That’s the problem with these many layers of politics – a breeding ground for politicians.

Yeah but, twats like Burnham and Khan swerved out of beung MPs to become mayors.

I dunno about Burnham, but it has managed to demonstrate that Khan is a fucking simpleton.

It is much more difficult to get back into the tent if one is any kind of a threat, especially with a rapidly diminishing number of safe seats.

Ironically Khan has a better chance through demographics ( cf the discussion about racial segregation in American districts ).

It would be so funny if Burnham lost the by-election and Labour lost the mayor vote as well.

MPs have discussed the possibility of Burnham offering Starmer the chance to stay on as foreign secretary and continue work on the Iran war and Ukraine.

Never going to work. No PM is going to give up the chance to travel and seem statesmanlike and play 2nd fiddle to a loser like Starmer. Foreign travel is also what PMs do to escape domestic politics and try to rebuild their failing image.

It would, but more likely, he won’t win the by-election, Labour keep the mayor job.

By-elections are weird, for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it affects nothing, so average voters don’t bother. It’s more protest voters that turn out. Secondly, every party can throw every resource at it, focus on it. The leadership take an interest, volunteers from miles around can help. It’s quite a risk playing the game of trying to get a seat transferred to them.

And is this “I’ll stand down for you Andy, sure” real? Or, when it comes to it will it be “you know what, maybe not”. The gamble you are taking as that MP is that Burnham wins the seat, orchestrates a victory, holds a general election where he gets you a safe seat and puts you into cabinet. Which feels like a whole lot of gambles.

Possibly underestimating the level of delusion in the labour party. I just got a local election leaflet, was which all about national policies and evil tories. Don’t think they’ve moved on from Fatcher yet, let alone caught up with current events.

Not many people remember Patrick Gordon-Walker. he needed a seat because he lost his own. He was a minister so they gave a peerage to some nonentity in a safe seat. Walker lost the by-election. This was in the 60s under Wilson.

Hmm, I remember Mrs Grist watching something on the BBBC about how to get rid of unwanted vermin breeding grounds. Should have paid more attention…

When the Revolutionaries wanted to mass-murder peasants in the Vendée for the terrible crime of being perfectly happy with their priests and gentry, they’d tie ’em up, put ’em in boats, tow the boats out and scuttle them. When the tide had gone out they’d recover the boats and make them ready for another round of use.

There’s surely a lesson there for us all.

And when the Germans marched into Royan in ’40 they were met with cheers & applause.

If the answer is more politicians, you have asked the wrong question!
