My theory on this is that socialism was attractive to bright teenagers, they went into the Labour Party and gradually moderated their views. But after the Berlin Wall fell, you don’t get many bright teenagers that believe in socialism.
The last of those teenagers were the likes of Blair, Straw, Blunkett. As you say, not the people you’d want, but you could sense a certain seriousness about them.
Only to a small vocal majority of bright teenagers were socialists. I was a bright teenager and all the socialist teenagers I met were less intelligent than I [there was one super-bright guy (subsequently a Professor) who was a Communist].

The Tories are about as bad as socialists. They believe in aristocratic, paternalistic rule. Cameron’s political hero is Harold Macmillan who was a fucking Tory. So, unsurprisingly, he was a nanny statist. Same with Osborne (sugar tax), May (various) and Boris (plastic straws, fracking, drinking on London Transport).
And what happened in the Cameron years is that they forgot it was supposed to be a broad church, went full-on Tory and so the Whigs fucked off to UKIP.

The Conservative Party was founded in opposition to the Whigs and about caring about the poor as well as the nouveau riche businessmen. The Whigs renamed themselves as Liberals.The amount of state regulation increased under the Whigs/Liberals which decreased personal freedom.
There are reasons why Churchill and MacMillan are my political heroes (partly of course because they *were* heroes, fighting and risking death for our country) but neither was a nanny statist – Mac attributed his success as Minister for Housing to his “bonfire of controls”. All the gains in freedom during my lifetime were under Conservative Prime Ministers.
I personally believe that Macmillan’s wonderful achievement in vastly improving the welfare of the poor [the famous quote “some people have never had it so good” was after he met an OAP whose pension was more than he had been paid for working under Attlee – which tells us a hell of a lot about Attlee’s so-called equality] should be applauded: only Mrs Thatcher got near.
