Never, ever, *ever* use an “endless” pop-up script again? Mebbe?

Three things:

1 Make the Edit button next to a comment permanently visible. Clearly, many commenters here don’t know a posted comment can be edited because they’ve never inadvertently moused over the hidden button, revealed it, and realised what it is.

2 Search by commenter. There are some excellent, extraordinary comments made here which rapidly become impossible to find.

3 Support webp image format uploads. Thank you.

+ 10 for those suggestions Norm, plus how about the odd pic of a nice looking bit of crumpet to break up the webpage…………

Shein adverts. Bring it on.

For some reason I see a hell of a lot of ’em on Guido. Not entirely sure why.

Probably not quite what you’re after but you can order threads by “most voted”. Quite useful when there’s 100+ comments.

Posting as a reply to a reply as a test, but I get the impression that nested comments only go 1 deep; maybe increase that, if that’s the case?

And that seems to be the case, at least on mobile. I understand there must be a limit, in extremis it would end up with deeply nested comments being one word wide.

Changing subject, “subscribe to post” to get future comments/replies to own comments?

Definitely. I hate having to go back to the thread to see if anyone has called me a BF.

2. Some years ago I asked, here, why I kept seeing a discount rate of 9% used in various spreadsheets.

I’m pretty sure John77 gave me an answer that it was to do with a dividend tax rate from way back.
Needless to say, I now can’t find his comment.

It’d be handy if he could restate it here, or somewhere, as it’s a bit annoying, personally.

Although if it wasn’t John77, I’m kinda stuck.

(Maybe there’s a wider point about institutions and memory being increasingly distributed via the Internet, and risks, but I can’t really be arsed right now).

I find the “you are upticking comments too fast” thing a bit annoying… It’s not my fault that I read quickly! 🙂

<s>Still being able to do HTML tags would be nice</s>
And personally, I quite liked the WYSIWYG pane under the comment field. I did actually use it rather than bitch about lack of an edit function. But then I’m mostly using a desktop. probably not so good on fones

Create an email white list to fix the invalid email problem I get whenever I try to include a link.

jgh
jgh

Is *that* what “invalid email address” mean? It actually means “oi, you’ve posted a link”, and nuffink to do with email addresses?

So I’d say: make error messages actually reflect what the error is.

thumbup on the good work though.

I know what is causing this but turning it off means comment spam. So I need to do a bit of research.

Great work on the site CM, thank you.

Wasted an hour talking communicating with Ebay’s help hinderance bot, which accused me of putting ‘personal contact information’ in an an advert. I hadn’t. But I had linked to a product review of the item i’m selling and that was the issue, but I didn’t find that out until I talked a real person.

I will contact you about this. I can’t replicate the issue. “My mom!!!! Look at this!!!” Then it stops.

I’ll contact you privately.

I find this the case on Safari on iOS, but then I have my phone and browser heavily strapped down.

I get the same problem using Safari on my iPad. I have to zoom in a bit to make it work so it’s probably something to do with the size of the icon.

I have an idea it may be to do with having made multiple comments on the same thread, and therefore having opened and closed comment boxes several times, and/or having made multiple edits to a comment such as copying and pasting sections about or adding paragraph breaks. I think it’s memory management.

I’ve occasionally seen the same thing. I’ve developed the habit of selecting the whole comment and copying before I post, because if it vanishes the text is still there on the Clipboard and I can try again.

CM,

I’m probably missing something obvious but – with this indented reply system – how does one practically read replies through the day, without having to scroll through the thread all over again. If there are lots of posts, and maybe a few new replies since I last read it (and I can tell that from the increased total number count on a refresh), I can’t see where the replies are without going down the whole thread (and intuitively using the time stamp info).

If you click at the top on “Newest”, sure, but that will only deal with new 1st level responses, not new replies to an older post? As I say, unless I am missing something?
[W7, old Firefox, although similar behaviour in a new version of Brave]

I do it by searching the page for the text “minutes ago”, “hour ago” and “x hours ago”.

But a nice way to do it might be to add a section to the sidebar with ‘Recent Comments On This Page’ and then a list of links to comments in reverse time order. If it moved as you scrolled so it was always displayed, you could just click through them one by one.

Come to think of it, it might be useful to have the ‘Recent Comments’ move down with you as you scroll, too. I’m always having to scroll back up to find the next link.

Interesting. btw, there is this, which I used to use more. It’s restricted to just the last 20 posts (across all threads):

https://www.timworstall.com/comments/feed/

But increasingly, I find myself simply scrolling through whole threads a day or more in arrears.

If I try to edit something, it tells me my e-mail address is invalid. At that point I can’t adjust or add the e-mail address (again) to confirm it, hence, I can’t edit? I could when this was first offered up, but then something changed?

Ah ha! I’ve found the problem.

I commented on somebody’s post in the ‘Already going to happen’ thread. I mistyped something, so chased the ‘Edit’ button and updated it. When selecting ‘Save’ it says “Invalid email address”. What *#”$@ email address? If you mean “you’re not allowed to edit replies”, than *SAY* “you’re not allowed to edit replies”…. and DON’T PUT AN EDIT BUTTON THERE!

If you *are* supposed to be allowed to edit replies, and there’s some problem with what I’ve done, then make the error message actually say what the problem is.

I’m seeing the following at the top of the page:

Deprecated: preg_match_all(): Passing null to parameter #2 ($subject) of type string is deprecated in /home/daabdfcs/timworstall.com/wp-content/plugins/cleantalk-spam-protect/lib/Cleantalk/ApbctWP/ContactsEncoder/Shortcodes/ExcludedEncodeContentSC.php on line 521

Deprecated: preg_replace_callback(): Passing null to parameter #3 ($subject) of type array|string is deprecated in /home/daabdfcs/timworstall.com/wp-content/plugins/cleantalk-spam-protect/lib/Cleantalk/ApbctWP/ContactsEncoder/Shortcodes/ExcludedEncodeContentSC.php on line 85

Also something similar (or maybe the same) at the bottom.I’m pretty sure it wasn’t there yesterday.

The redirect-redirect-redirect-bork is fixed, but now I’m getting:
Deprecated: preg_match_all(): Passing null to parameter #2 ($subject) of type string is deprecated in /home/daabdfcs/timworstall.com/wp-content/plugins/cleantalk-spam-protect/lib/Cleantalk/ApbctWP/ContactsEncoder/Shortcodes/ExcludedEncodeContentSC.php on line 521

…at the top and bottom of the page. Doesn’t stop the content being readable, so could be put-up-with-able.
