Nicaragua’s long-serving president, Daniel Ortega, has said the country will hold no further elections to prevent the opposition from coming to power.
The 80-year-old authoritarian leader, who has been in office since 2007, also said he would work with the congress he controls to pass new laws that would “build a wall” against the opposition.
Is he still a lefty hero? Or has all that passed?

Their problem is that their philosophy does not comport with reality, so having picked off the low-hanging fruit (pit owners in top hats, urchins starving in the gutter) they are compelled to continue the advance until they find themselves attacking people who dare to say women can’t have penises, flooding their countries with foreign rapists, inventing ‘far right’ ‘terror plots’, canonising violent drug addict criminals and jailing the police officers who arrest them, rewriting the race of offenders in other circumstances, claiming cows are destroying the earth, and so on.
Clearly even today’s ill-educated and inattentive populations will eventually have had enough of this, so at that point there are really only three options:
1. Murder your opponents.
2. Ban your opponents.
3. ‘No more elections for you.’
