Our YouTube traffic in July was only around 1.1 million views, when at present something closer to 2 million is more commonplace,
A quick look at ad rates for creators says $1 to $5 per 000. It would surprise if Spud were at the top end of that.
£1500 a month income?
£3,000? Out of which he’s got to pay the staff?
And of course it’s hated capitalist advertising which pays him that money. I’m surprised he stoops to accept it, a man of his principles.
More meetings required. With biscuits.
The Great Bongo did make the point that at the last event in Cambridge he said his hourly rate was between £2 to £3 per hour once all costs are taken into account.
There’s been a notable fall off in viewer numbers in recent weeks- he dips into the old tropes every couple of weeks (“the stock market is about to crash” or “Trump is evil”) which can get decent numbers but whilst there is a market for videos along the lines of “everything in your life is rubbish but it’s someone else’s fault and I have all the answers”, people get bored and move on to the next thing – especially as soon as they realise his answer to everything is more tax and more government. It’s his sheer output that’s keeping him going. But I don’t think the ‘algorithm’ is a big fan of basically the same video churned out every day.
This is my point – there’s only so many times you can rebadge the same thing – despite attempts to use various wheezes such as ‘Quantum economics’ and too many initiatives to count (CLASS, The Fair Tax Mark, Sustainable accounting etc) there’s a dwindling appetite for it.
Hence the ‘demand’ for some kind of sinecure. Even his anti-semitism can be seen in this context – he’s hoping the ISIS/ Hamas supporting Muslim candidates might not have any economic advisors at his level and can elevate him to the Lords.
Is there anyone at his level?
“Out of which he’s got to pay the staff?”
He rather coyly referred to an ‘intern’. You don’t think, surely not, that he’s got some student working there for nothing?
I believe that the intern is his son, who is genuinely not fashionably autistic, but I’m not a hundred per cent au courant with the doings of the Murphy household.
Praise where praise is due, Richard Murphy is giving his son a job, the cost of which comes out of his own pocket, to top up the lad’s benefits income. Murphy also writes pretty good English. He could probably have made more money as an employee in financial admin, but he’s on a crusade, a Holy Grail, a life mission. Perhaps one day his genius will be recognized and he’ll get a cushy job with pension and benefits in the civil service, with the power to inflict actual misery on his enemies. Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and he’s hoping that he’ll have greatness thrust upon him.
The problem with so much media is barriers to entry. Anyone can set up a camera and talk shite. Even amongst people that know what they are on about, there’s a lot of competition.
More and more YouTube content is becoming about selling something else. Anna Lapwood puts snippets of her organ concerts on YouTube, so, you buy a ticket to go (if you can get one). Tyler Cowen does his YouTube conversations which are part of the job of being an educator.
SpaceX channel was a form of corporate comms, getting investors excited. The other thing is, it costs fuck all to do. The effing cool bit of the video is the rockets which you/re sending up anyway. Put a few cameras in them, do a bit of infographics, get someone in the team to present it. Landing a rocket on a barge in the sea kinda pisses on a retired accountant talking shite.
Please don’t encourage Murphy to do his videos wearing a sparkly jacket.
I don’t actually watch his videos. Well I tried once, might learn something, a mark of intelligence is willingness to change your mind, then the post-lunch drowsiness kicked in, but at least it’s not completely terra incognita. Still the thumbnails pop up on my YouTube home page sometimes. He doesn’t seem to have many guests on his show, which is a pity, because Murphy himself looks very normal, not unlike Murray Walker, and I was hoping for some genuine Bolsheviks, or a white whale with purple hair, piercings and face tats. If JP can get away with sparkly jackets, to be honest (for a change) I go online mainly for entertainment.
Just for a second I read that as “Anna Lapwood puts snippets of her organ on YouTube”…
What’s this “our” ?
Perhaps Murphy thinks that he is entitled to use the Royal plural?
He has to give all the voices in his head a cut.,
It’s probably much lower. A successful channel could get as much as $5,000 for a long-form video with one million views. SpudTV is getting 1.1m views across loads of videos and that level of engagement is not rewarded.
Long form videos have multiple ad breaks, don’t they?
By long form I meant not YouTube shorts, which are generally under a minute. Standard YouTube videos might be a better way to describe them, so anything from 2 mins to hours. I think that they generally only put multiple ads into longer videos if the channel has decent viewer numbers.
eg I watched the French Top 14 final on YT the day after and it was blighted with ads but they might not bother for Spud.
Question is ,how many people watch YouTube videos? On a board like this, I guess the proportion is higher. But with the general public? I find that out of the people I know, there’s far more Whatsapping amusing Instagram links. There’s two or three send me YouTube links on serious subjects. I don’t think YouTube’s market penetration is anything like it’s claimed to be if you exclude things like TV programme shorts etc. The market seems to be a certain sort of person. And I’m guessing that’s people with time on their hands. And people with time on their hands are? Not good advertising targets for a start.
I think YT is seeping into the mass market. Smart TVs have been the game changer, you no longer need to connect your PC to your TV, its all in there to start with, accessible via the remote. And I don’t think YT is the sort of stuff people share, thats for silly pics, short videos, memes etc. When you watch a half hour or longer YT video you don’t think ‘I know I’ll send this to X’ any more than one would have told them what TV program to watch.
If you want to watch YT on a big smart TV you really need a subscription or the patience of a saint because the frequency of ad breaks increases with the size of the screen.
Not really, you need https://smarttubeapp.github.io/
Does everything the official app does, except they don’t implement the ad breaks
Like a lot of these things, my immediate thought was: what’s paying for that? How are these BoC’s exploiting me?
A lot of programmers write something for themselves to use. Maybe they fancy a challenge in their spare time puzzling out the youtube client api, maybe they just really hate ads on youtube videos.
They might then decide to make it available for everyone else for free. Partly out of idealism, partly because it doesn’t cost anything to chuck it up on github anyway, and partly because you then get other people fixing your bugs for you.
So the answer to your question here is: the corporates that buy paid-for github accounts that then subsidise the free-to-use ones.
Since people do send me links to YT videos… Someone in UK used to send me links to vids by some Brit ex-pat up near Alicante waffling on about living in Spain. Delivered at about 2 words a second with pauses. The information content approached zero. I had to ask him to stop sending them.
The sender? He’s a mate runs a retail business in UK. Visits here regularly. In other words shopkeeper. Done that. Been there. You get long breaks between customers & if there’s nothing to do in the shop it gets boring.
Another one’s my cousin. Very prolific sender until I told him to piss off. And still does it. He’d call himself a businessman. He owns, or did own, numerous HMOs & at one point was developing a piece of land with an apartment block. But in my opinion, he knows SFA about property or development. He’s living on capital with other people doing all the actual work. I can’t imagine what he does all day but he always tells me he’s very busy.
Video content. Usually some assole waffling about something I was aware of a week previously. Or equivalents of Spud from the right.
How much revenue does does Spud get from YT? Surely, that’s going to be related to how quickly people click the Skip button on the ads.(YT ads do have Skip buttons?) And how many click out from the ads. If they’re keen Spud consumers, they won’t like the principal of advertising. And they’ll share his resentment for anyone with more money than they have. Which implies they don’t have much money. So you’re down to those will click out for the entertainment value. So I’d guess he’s down at the bottom end of pay-per-view.
122 million people a day apparently. 500 million visit instagram each day.
I only watch the first 30s or so, simply so I can hit the thumbs down button on every one.
I watch quite a lot of YouTube videos, on my phone and on the telly. Our TV isn’t a smart one but our Sky box and broadband router are in a package and sort of work together.
I like music videos, videos about cars and motorbikes, comedy, stuff like that. Tutorials are really great if you need to know how to fix something or keep your pepper plants alive over the winterThe ads are a bit intrusive but not too bad, I don’t quite watch enough stuff to make it worth paying to go ad free.
Adblocker works so I rarely see utube ads. If I need to fix something there is usually a suitable vid. Other than that various farming, restoration, wood and metal working, cars, sailing, etc. I don’t have a TV, but probably watch stuff on utube for a couple of hours most days.
As a matter of interest, how do they deal with subscribers who visit YouTube channels?
There’s a couple of German and French channels that I visit regularly and I assumed that they get something, eventually, no matter how small? I still bung them some money every now and then because they deliver good quality.
Be interesting to know why you’re doing that, BiND. Entertainment value? Or information? The information density of the video format is tiny. Single figure percent of equivalent text/graphics. What does that say about the value of your time?
Mostly language learning, there’s some very good stiff out there. I also like some of the history stuff, recently I’ve been watching these:
https://youtube.com/@ww2britishvalor?si=IjWB79QXzcnFOTj5
Arthur Bostrom actually speaks French fluently.
Agree. I rarely watch moving picture of any kind. For me, YT is for quoting old Monty Python sketches I remember from half a century ago, and (ironically) learning specific functions in software when I know what I want to achieve but don’t know the best way to go about it.
I put his channel into a site that estimates its revenue. $20,000 a year. Which is not nothing, but given the time and staff costs, not to mention his top of the range kit and make up artist, is not enough to bother an accountant of his expertise.
YouTube awards retention above all else, and even his greatest fans must struggle to listen to him prattle on for more than a minute
My immediate thought was who does that site belong to? You could just be looking at promotion for YT. It’s like OnlyFans. If you divide the number accounts into distributed revenue you get well under a thousand bucks a year average. Average. There are big earners on OF. I know quite a few OF content creators. Mostly they’ve made pin money. Even the girl who’s a recognised pr0n star with lots of material out there on pr0n sites was making peanuts. You regularly see stuff about OF content providers rolling in it. But who’s putting that out?
OF PR team I’d guess.
Whatever Spud is earning from YT, he’s eligible (b.1958?) for the state pension (£12,548pa?) + any occupational pensions (if any) + media interview fees (small beer, if any) + any grants + donations….Is his wife supporting him?
Those sites always WAY over-estimate
if you were suffering from insomnia then £45 might be a bargain for a decent afternoon kip.
the actual announcement almost sent me to sleep with its unneccesary verbosity.
