A ‘violent’ air passenger was duct-taped to his seat in the US after attacking another traveller and racially abusing a flight attendant.

Arthur Lundeen, 67, of Arizona, allegedly began choking the person next to him two hours into an American Airlines flight between Texas and Newark, New Jersey, on Friday, witnesses claimed.

Of course, an Englishman would already have been informed by the campaign here to show that choking is Bad, M’Kay, and therefore would not have done that.

It’s that burden of Empire again, having to show the Fuzzie Wuzzies how to behave.

We had this discussion the other day.

Perhaps he was engaging in a sex act.

Seat belts extensions on aircraft can be used to restrain an unruly passenger, but as this was an in internal US flight they were probably all in use for their “normal” purpose.

Duct tape is a useful thing.

After 9/11 when the transatlantic flights were resuming, American Airways booked all of the Air Marshal seats in advance so all the flights became available with exactly one passenger booked per cabin……. making it a lot easier not to get shot because you knew exactly where the people legally carrying guns would be sitting..

Most passenger airplanes are now deliberately designed so that about the only way to open a hole in midflight is explosively.

I suspect something something DB Cooper…

Whatever happened to lots of zip ties? They have the added advantage of digging in and being quite painful for anyone who struggles.

Obviously duck tape for the mouth.

I find it slightly unnerving that American Airlines are routinely sending their planes into the skies with a roll of duck tape handy.

Oh, and a pendantic reminder that it actually is duck tape. Same root as the German verb ‘decken’ meaning ‘to cover’.

Good point. Duct tape is usually silver metallic.

‘Duck’ (verb) in German is abducken.

Duck Tape is a brand in the UK. Get it at B&Q.
Like Gorilla Glue. I refuse to use that, because it is made from boiled down great apes.

Here in Clogland we still have the packs of cheep instant noodles with the brilliant Engrish “Vegetarian Flavour”.

I never fail to ask staff in shops that carry it if they can guarantee it’s actually made from real vegetarians…..

No. Duck Tape is a specific brand of cloth based self adhesive tapes that are often generically referred to as Duct Tape. Anyone can manufacture Duck Tape but only Shurtape Technologies can officially name their product Duck Tape. Search for 3M Duct Tape and you will see that’s how it’s named on the packet.

“If it moves and shouldn’t use duck tape. If it doesn’t move and should use WD 40”

One might hope that American Airlines also carry a can of the latter…

A ‘violent’ air passenger was duct-taped to his seat

WTF are the quotes for?

racially abusing a flight attendant

What does that mean? Called her names? Wouldn’t that be verbal abuse?

Lundeen . . . allegedly began ‘choking’ the person next to him

Fixed it.

A fine report from journalizard Alexander Butler.

A tad amateurish, judging from the pic…..

Then again… properly taping up stuff is probably not a crucial skill for cabin crew…. 😉

Not to mention, trying to tape up a moving (indeed, resisting) target. I’m sure the strategy is simply to get as many turns around the subject as quickly as possible.
I am surprised by two things. First, they didn’t duct tape his mouth – maybe by the time he was trussed up most of the fight had gone out of him; second – the US reports show a picture with his face pixelated – for his “privacy” I suppose, while the Telly shows his face without distortion. That’s a nice distinction in a story where you identify him by name, state his occupation, place of work, and confirm with his (now former) employer that they fired him immediately on hearing the news – but ‘Oh my goodness, we can’t show his picture.’

We don’t know the other side of the story, do we? It’s something I don’t like about air travel. The homicidal urges it provokes regarding the other passengers. Let’s not go into the feelings one has regarding cabin crew & airport staff..

How is it Ryanair staff refer to passengers again?

Think it was ‘self loading luggage’!

The Englishman would have only known that after the UK government had issued him the booklet informing him that choking other people was not allowed.

As an American, we didn’t get that booklet so we had no way of knowing.
