Extreme outperformance is rarer in women, yes

The enduring cult of male genius is keeping down female film-makers, one of the only two female directors in the running for the top prize at this year’s Venice film festival has warned.

“I’ve never ever read an article where a female director is promoted as a genius,” said the Danish-Egyptian director May el-Toukhy, whose film Woman Unknown has been selected for the Golden Lion competition on the Lido this year.

Different shapes of the bell curve between genders. Well known fact, that.

Even tho’ saying so cost Larry Summers his job as President of Harvard it’s still one of those true things.

The big scandal here is the way women are excluded from the media and thus can’t write articles where a female director is promoted as a genius.

Is it difference between genders, or differences between sexes? If a woman writes “Mr” on her passport does she have a greater chance of being on the edge of the bell curve? I notice that blokes who write “Miss” in their passport seem to remain in the wide bell curve and don’t become mediocre.

Harvard sacking Summers – another account had it that many of the academics loathed him and his saying something so unfashionable gave them just the pretext they needed.

Probably, don’t know of course, the same thing for Nathan Cofnas. Hey, we have an excuse!

I am sure someone has said this about Kathryn Bigelow, and maybe Agnes Varda.

But how many women have more than 3 great movies? Bigelow’s done 5 films I like a lot. Jane Campion has one. Greta Gerwig has 3. Compare that to Spielberg, Hitchcock, Scorsese, James Cameron, Denis Villeneuve.

Well, obviously, because they’ve been kept down by the patriarchy.

Women:we are being discriminated against
Also women; we want a safe, routine life and work-life balance.

The most observable difference is that lads start making films young, and with whatever they have to hand. Edgar Wright, Spielberg started making films when about 12. This on the family film video camera with their mates.

No one gave these lads a hand up. They made cheap films but people noticed they were pretty good cheap films. So they got a bit more money. Any woman could have done what they, Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez or Christopher Nolan did. But women don’t.

One of the biggest lies ever told was that we were somehow keeping female talent down, and letting them vote, go to yooni, have abortions and so on would unleash the hitherto untapped potential of all that female genius.

We’re 100 years in to the experiment in sexual equality, so where are all the great works of art, great literature, amazing inventions and world beating companies developed by women?

*crickets*

There’s a reason why every civilisation in human history, even ones that didn’t know about each other because they were on the opposite side of the world, came to identical conclusions about women, hey?

The thing with successful women in politics, the arts and sciences is that they’re often a bit outside the normal range. Like I think Portrait of a Lady on Fire is brilliant, one of my favourite movies of 2019, but the director is a lesbian. Grace Hopper advanced the development of compilers, but never had children. Dorothy L Sayers had a very unconventional lifestyle for the time.

The great lie is that regular women can excel in these fields. When it requires a level of commitment that being a mum doesn’t work with. Being a film director means going off to a place for weeks, working 16 hour days. There’s actually quite a lot of women that are film editors, but that’s more like a 9-5.

The same is true of successful men. They’re usually a bit weirder, a bit more greedy or egotistical maybe, and a lot more driven than the average man. But the one thing they’re not is normal. Normal is mediocre. Success is not normal.

That’s very true.

Prince, Steve Jobs, Kubrick were all a bit out there.

Prince is proof God loves us.

Not just for Purple Rain, Nothing Compares 2 U, or Charlie Murphy’s anecdotes. But also because he was a half caste working class midget who dressed like an Edwardian poof, yet got more fanny than the women’s toilet at Heathrow airport.

Truly an inspiration to us all, especially the younger generation.

Every fucking female director is labeled as a genius. that is how they justify putting someone with one mildly successful movie under their belt in charge of a billion dollars.

and then its ‘racists and misogyny’ during the whole marketing cycle because they know its shite.

Perhaps they should sing the praises of Leni Riefenstahl. A woman who made it in a man’s world…..

Tbf, Triumph of the Will is boring and the main character is unlikable.

I’d rather watch The Great Escape again.
