We should freeze frontier AI development – that is, the effort to build AGI, and only resume the work when there is strong public buy-in and broad scientific consensus that it will be done safely and controllably.
And we should Organise! Politically! To Make Sure!
It’s the political dream project. It’s impossible – no polity has the power to stop development globally – and will require massive effort. So, gibs me all the money to make the effort, right? Speeches and rallies and marches and achieve wholly nothing.
Perfection.
That “scientific consensus” rears its mythical head again, having crept over from “AGW” somehow.
Nationalise AI. That should stop all progress.
I dunno. The Chinese seem to be doing quite well with it.
It is China that makes this entire ambition a complete WOFT.
Rhymes with climate change/Net Zero.
Regulating AI is like trying to put socks on an octopus. Too many players.
Unless the government draws up regulations that they imagine will make AI super safe. Then when an AI bot goes rogue, although approved by government, it’s government, not the developer who is on the hook for the damages.
Trebles all round, see indemnity for nRNA jabs, etc.
The government is never held responsible for its failings. Mostly, nothing is done, and in the few cases where there is compensation it’s paid from taxes, so paid by us – not the government.
I had to look at the article for AGI. “Artificial general intelligence” WTF!?!? There’s no actual intelligence there. So how can it be general?
Of course, as far as jobs are concerned, a lot of jobs don’t require intelligence. Most desk jockying. They’re just distributed data processing according to simple rules. Perfect for a machine.
It’s not Artificial Intelligence anymore, it’s Super Intelligence.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
We should stop “writing words” until there is global consensus that this “writing” thing can be used safely and can’t be used to promote bad things.
Guardian pretending to know what AI is.
‘Frontier AI’ sounds like Spud speak.
