Workers at the leftwing news outlet the Canary fear it will not survive beyond this year amid access to funds being blocked and allegations of financial mismanagement and internal turmoil.
The site, which was founded in 2015 against a backdrop of the wave of support for the then Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, appeared set to expand after a multimillion-pound injection of funds last year.
…
Some journalists at the Canary, however, have said they believe the banking issues had been used to distract from wider financial mismanagement. They claim the funding, believed to be more than £2m, has been squandered on projects including a short-lived newspaper and the purchase of other websites.
Do not forget these are the wise lefties who insist that if only wise lefties were in charge than Britain would be a land of milk and honey. Rather than, you know, a bankrupt wasteland?
Snigger.
We are at a time when we are doing things that are putting a massive target on our backs, and I am expecting the full force of the system to be placed upon us in due course
Happening to Reform right now.
The difference is that Reform are a bit more serious. Tankies mostly care about being in charge of the tankies. People’s Front of Judea stuff.
If you think money falls from the sky you’re never going to do a good job of managing it.
Indeed…

The Canary in the gold mine.
There is something seriously wrong with a person, like me for instance, who enjoys the sight of fools and their money being parted.
Slightly OT, but a comment on journalism in general. How very little value it creates. It must be far more than it consumes.
When there were the old style reporters it did create value. It brought people valuable information for the basis of decisions, the reporters had discovered. But now almost all reporting is coloured by the opinions of the journalists. What’s chosen to be reported & how it’s reported. It’s almost impossible to get at the facts.
What actual value has the Canary ever created?
Oi, BiS, what can you tell us about the anti-illegal-immigration demos in Spain? The coverage here is thin.
We had one on the Plaza de la Constitucion very near my gaff. Can’t say I actually saw it because I was otherwise occupied. But I was told it was fairly well attended. And most of them seem to have been similar.
It is an issue seems to be exercising the Spanish. Particularly here in Andalucia. Morocco’s just opposite. You can see it from Algeciras. And we do have a considerable Moroccan community. Although infestación would probably be the Spanish noun.
And to hear about the one you had over there. Expertly coordinated & orchestrated. Let’s hope it’s just an opener.
Or was it a false flag? They looked awfully similar to those antifa thugs in the US…..
The internet lowered the cost and added a lot more competition. Everything that used to be in The Times is now also in other places. Like they have a “business correspondent” writing about rare metals, but there’s also people in the know like Timmy writing about it.
And mostly these generalists can’t compete. We can all access thousands of people with obscure knowledge. And if you’re a business you want that. You don’t want a “middle east correspondent” writing about Syria. You want a bloke that knows Syria. And you don’t mind spending a lot more than a Times subscription for good information.
So the newspapers are really just entertainment now, reinforcing beliefs.
But it’s not really that valuable. Anyone can knock out poorly informed toss about “why capitalism is bad” or “English wine is going to be huge because of global warming”.
If you’re a serious person in wine you know the situation. But you’re not writing for the papers. You are writing detailed reports at £200+ a pop for an audience that don’t mind paying for it.
In human affairs, there are no brute or basic facts because we all interpret our experience to some extent. Journalists and scribblers have never been an exception. They have always interpreted social and political events and trends according to their own preconceptions. [This is not relativism, because the mountain exists objectively even though it can be viewed from an infinity of perspectives.]
Theo. You’re conflating reporters with journalists. It was a professional pride with reporters that they reported the facts. All of the facts. Without selection or bias & definitely without opinion. As one once told me. You don’t describe something as long. You measure it & write the figures..
Nope, I’m not. Both journalists and reporters interpret to some extent what they observe of human affairs. Finding out what happened involves interpretation.
Journalism, at one time, had value. Same as Skalds, Minstrels, and Troubadours/Travelling Salesmen, and others of that ilk.
Nowadays you have a worldwide audience on whatever social media outlet you choose….
Dissemination of information is a *tad* easier…. So the actual value of a given bit of imformation Tanked.
So did the value of Journalism…. It’s just that the Lizards haven’t caught on yet…
Speaking of which, I was in Dublin last weekend.
This weekend I see reports on X about a stabbing at the exact spot I was a week ago.
An adherent of the ‘Religion of Peace’ tried shoving a kitchen knife into someone’s belly.
Go to RtE news to find out more, only to have to search closely for something I would have thought would be a big deal.
Look at the other big Irish papers only to find the same, barely mentioned.
Turns out lunatics stabbing people in the heart of Dublin city center isn’t that newsworthy.
“…access to funds being blocked”
Who’s stopping them getting their money from their customers?
Oh, they don’t have any customers. As you were.
Canary was scraping along making losses and living on donations. I doubt turnover was more than £250k.
Worthless based on asset value, so any value is brand awareness.
August 2025 Belfast based Ulida Investments took a near 50% stake for amount as yet undisclosed. Suggestions of £2m seem very high ? That values the Canary at c. £5m, a lot of brand.
If £2m had suddenly appeared in Canary bank accounts and big chunks go out then that could well trigger AntiMoneyLaundering enquiries. Probably 20 years tunover all in 1 go. Lloyds would be legally required to ask some difficult questions and freeze accounts if not satisfied. Big fines for ignoring that sort of thing. They also are not allowed to disclose why they froze an account.
