That\’s arguable. For AOL it was the best deal in history, swapping hugely overvalued stock in an internet bubble company for real business assets.

The definitive book on the merger is “There Must Be A Pony In Here Somewhere” by Kara Swisher.
The key phrase is “How a company without assets bought a company without a clue.”

TICK. Steve Case at AOL is probably the best CEO of any company ever, if the job of a CEO is to maximise shareholder value: swapping bugger all for a 50% stake in the world’s largest media company achieves that.

(the impressive thing is that Gerald Levin is a long way from the worst CEO of any company ever, despite swapping a 50% stake in the world’s largest media company for bugger all…)
